We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sirquincy Ray. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sirquincy below.
Sirquincy , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only male in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I have learned to be effective through my ability to use critical thinking to find creative solutions in all areas of my life. Firmly believing in “if there’s a will there’s a way,” and using that motto daily. I love to find effective and efficient ways to satisfy a need, and to work smarter not harder.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a Black male Pedicurist, Advanced nail therapist, Medical Pedicurist, CMP certified master pedicurist. Although the nail industry is dominanted largely by Vietnamese women, there was this emerging desire and interest in this billion dollar market. I begin my nail journey when I lost myself within myself and couldn’t find an outlet to express my creativeness. I remember it was difficult finding jobs and getting fired because I was getting bored with doing the same thing each day, I remember going into a nail salon and being looked at weird as if I was lost or didn’t really belong, so I inquire about a manicure and pedicure only to find out it would cost me $130, once it dawned on me how much nail technicians could possibly make. I decided after getting my massage therapist license I would get my nail license next. I was motivated because I’ve found a creative outlet to express my creativeness. I remember not telling anyone regarding my education because it was birth through a foot fetish, lol. I didn’t want anyone to judge me nor think that I was weird. I hasn’t seen any black guys in my neighborhood doing nails, there’s this heavy stigma that comes with it and most decide it’s not worth society questioning their Masculinity. So as life would have it after being on my corporate job for a while and secretly doing nails covid happen, I was furlough and was like what will I do now, all the nail salons has closed etc. So I created waterless pedicures, again remember telling myself if there is a will their is definitely a way.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Definitely communication skills, problem solving, being a team player, intuitive, professionalism and a solid work ethic, leadership, detail oriented. Mindset is a critical part of career growth, to take advantage of as many opportunities as you can. Ask as many questions as you can think of, job shadowing to see if that’s the path you would like to walk in and to learn what there role is like.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I begin yoga years back to train my mindset to pause and breathe, anytime I’m overwhelmed I stop for a moment to focus. I begin to be vocal with my feelings to express more, practicing mindfulness meditation and to give myself grace. To say “no” when needed.
