We recently connected with Skylar Tourigny and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Skylar with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic started as a child watching my mom take care of her family. She was the oldest out of 9 kids in her family. She raised 3 children of her own. Every morning I would accompany my mom to the market to buy fresh produce and fish to cook dinner for our family. She taught my siblings and I to be self-sufficient. She always said, you need to be able to do things for yourself. My mom managed to take care of everyone and everything daily. She never complained and she is the most selfless person I know.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My passion for fashion and love for good food and wine led me to open a designer shoes and chocolate store in Manhattan Beach in 2009, an organic cafe by my house in 2012 and a high-end restaurant bar in Hermosa Beach in 2019. Decadence is a combination of everything I love. We offer unique crafted cocktails, great food and live music in a beautifully decorated atmosphere. I wanted to create a place where everyone could enjoy multiple times a week. A place to just unwind, enjoy a cocktail and happy hour at the bar or indulge in a full menu in our dining room. We offer events such as, Boozy Bingo on Wednesday nights and live music on the weekends. We specialize in group parties and special celebrations. I love creating a special menu for private parties and working with our guests to provide a memorable experience.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Set a goal, follow it through and don’t give up when it’s difficult.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
There are pros and cons on being your own boss. The obvious pros are that you can set your own schedule, do things your way and don’t have to answer to anyone. These are all great things but be prepared to work all day and everyday. I’ve been my own boss for 14 years and would like to potentially collaborate with someone. I would love to grow my business.
