We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sofia Ferreira a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sofia, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I had low self-esteem when I was a teenager which lasted well up until my twenties. After a messy breakup, I decided to focus on myself. I started going to museums, concerts, dance shows, and movies, all by myself. Absorbing all that creative energy from art saved me and gave me confidence and self-esteem. I just hope my photography can do that to someone one day.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a mother, a scientist, a partner, a traveller, and an artist. I’m also a film photographer. I try to document what I see and I believe film really shows how I experience what is put in front of me. The colours are so true. The light is so faithful. Photographing on film allows me to slow down, and don’t we all need to adopt a slower pace of life in this modern age? You will most likely find me enjoying a plant-based latte with my babies playing not too far, or on long walks in nature. The ocean, the forest and the mountains are key elements in my life and that is why you see them featured here. I’m goofy, I almost always choose comfort over looking fancy, and I love using both sides of my brain.
I am only taking photography projects that I see a true connection with. So do get in touch if you think you have one 🙂
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the most important part of my journey was getting to know myself and truly be grateful for everything that comes with it. Embracing every single detail of ourselves, especially the flaws – they are what make us unique –, is the single best thing we can do for ourselves. Take one day at a time. Focus on absorbing and learning that others, but also take time to fail. All these steps are needed.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
I am currently going through a messy divorce after a couple of years of death and birth. I am embracing my new self but still trying to figure out who that may be. It’s a journey, not a destination. I am living day by day and I am ok with that for now. I know better days will come.
