Meet Sofia Padilla

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sofia Padilla. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Sofia , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I think finding your purpose now a days can be hard and even more as young adults, so if you are part of that small percentage that figured already out what your purpose is, you should feel very blessed because thats definitely how I feel. I think that to find my purpose, first I had to figure out what my talent and passions where. Since I was little i Ioved singing, it has always been the place I go if I couldn’t figure out how to say something or what I was feeling, I always found easier to talk through lyrics, melodies and music. Pouring my heart out to a piano or guitar, and just singing words over that made sense in my head and made it be at peace. The first presentations I did with my original work in front of a crowd that weren’t my parent or my friends, made me realize that what I was doing was my purpose in life. Seeing that my music also talked to other people, that they felt that someone understood their feeling, or that someone finally had lived the same thing as them and listening a ¨thank you so much, your song healed me and made me feel understood and heard ¨ was the mot wholesome feeling. Because of that, today I understand that making music is my purpose, making music form me and for people. To make people happy with my art, to make people feel understood, to make people feel something with whatever I make is my purpose. Is what make me happy but most important if it is what makes someone else happy there is where I win.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Hey I’m Fia, I’m a 24 year old singer and songwriter from Mexico City. I have been around music my entire life, taking singing lessons since I was 14 and piano since I was 16, but since I was little I was always singing and doing music without even knowing that it would be the love of my life. I was always in choir, school festivals and open mics, I always putted myself in the spotlight. This passion grew with time and with me, and when it came to deciding what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go for college, my answer was super clear, I wanted to do music, it was the only thing that actually made sense in my head, what made me happy. Berklee came along with hat decision, I applied and here I stand in my 6th semester, almost finishing my 3rd year and going into my last. And even though Berklee has been hard for many reasons is the best decision I made, because even if I am away from home, family, friends, food, community and everything that makes home your home, doing everyday and studying what you love the most is something that can not be wasted. I’m so blessed to have the opportunity that I have to do what I love everyday even if it comes with homework. Last year I also decided that it was time to start my project, that it was time to give my music to all the world and put myself and the best part of me (my music) out for everyone to listen to it. So I started in 2023 working on my personal project as an artist as ‘FIA’, I spend months in the studio working with my amazing producers Aureo Baqueiro, Jan Toussaint and Omar Varu, creating songs that represented me, the most clear version of myself. It was a long road of thinking and succeeding but also struggling, failing and stating over. And honestly thats what music is about, just discovering yourself and your voice as an artist, and that takes time. Music is hard people, it takes your full creativity, vulnerability, sensibility and concentration, and that at times can be draining, but once you have the final product every second is worth it. And after that long year of work on 2024 I have released two singles, they are my babies and I’m so proud of them ‘No se puede negar’ and ‘Lo que quiero hacer’, which you can find in any streaming platform, and the videos in YouTube. The next steps are more and more music, hopefully some presentations soon, as of today I can tell everyone that I will be the opening act for an extremely talented friend of mine in the Lilipad on November 14th at Cambridge, and I’ll post everything in my social media @fiamusicmx. But definitely expect more music very soon.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think musically the best skill that I have is my versatility to move around genres, because that helped me define what was my musical path and what I wanted my music to sound like. But beside the theoretical side the most important thing to me is being confident on who you are, what you do and what you want to achieve. In this world and industry everyone is going to have an opinion, everyone is going to judge you, criticize you or just try to pull you down. You need to stay true to yourself because that is what makes you different and special and no one can take that away form you. And with that being said, also never compare yourself, I know sometimes this is impossible, but it will get to a point where understanding that the music world is such a big world and all of us as artists fit in it, and that all of us are on different levels of our journey so don’t compare yourself, instead admire and make to be like that someone or to get to that place your goal and work towards that, but work for you, for you to be happy and accomplish what you want, not for other and not to prove something.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

I think if I am where I am, being the person that I am is because of my parents. I’m an only child so my parents are also my best friends, they have been my biggest support in everything I’ve done, every decision I made, every step I take, absolutely everything that happens with me and my life my parents have always held my hand. They always has pushed my dreams of doing music, being an artist and just doing this for a leaving. They have surround me with love and confidence on everything I create, they are my biggest fans I love them to the moon and back.
