We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sofie Captain. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sofie below.
Sofie, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
A lot of my confidence and self-esteem comes from the people I surround myself with. I’m especially grateful for my amazing mother—her confidence and work ethic have always inspired me. My family has supported my dreams from the beginning, and without them, I may not have pursued photography the way I have.
Recently, I started working as a salon coordinator, and being around strong, driven women every day has been empowering. I truly believe that surrounding yourself with genuine people who want to see you succeed makes all the difference. A positive mindset and the right support system can completely transform your confidence and outlook on life.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Photography has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. As a little girl, I was always taking pictures—borrowing my mom’s Canon camera because I didn’t have my own yet, but dreaming of the day I would. For me, photography is more than just taking pictures—it’s a way to share how I see the world and to preserve moments that people can treasure forever.
What I love most isn’t about recognition or being the biggest name out there. It’s about the quiet, meaningful moments I get to share with others. Every photo session is a chance to connect, to hear someone’s story, and to be a small part of their journey. That connection—that shared moment—is what makes this work so special to me. I feel truly grateful to wake up each day and do what I love.
I began pursuing photography professionally in the fall of 2021, starting at Columbia College Chicago before transferring to the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. That move was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made—for my growth as a photographer and as a person.
At MIAD, I found not only lifelong friends but also mentors who truly believed in me. My professors—especially Grant Gill, Jon Horvath, and Tara Bogart—created a space where I felt supported, challenged, and inspired. Their belief in me gave me the confidence to push myself and trust my voice as an artist.
I’ll always be grateful for the lessons they taught me and the impact they’ve had on my journey. Knowing someone sees your potential can change everything—and they did that for me.
After graduating college, I stepped into a new role as a salon coordinator—an opportunity that has allowed me to grow my social media marketing skills while being surrounded by strong, driven women who inspire me every day. I truly love the environment I’m part of and feel so grateful I took this opportunity. In just a short time, I’ve already learned so much and continue to grow both personally and professionally.
Alongside this role, I’ve been pouring more energy into my photography business, @sofie.captain.photography on Instagram. I’m currently working on launching a website, building new connections, and expanding my clientele. With more flexibility post-graduation, I’ve had the chance to create more, collaborate with new people, and capture some really special moments. I’m so excited to continue growing and to meet even more amazing faces.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The best advice I can give to anyone just starting out is this: do what scares you. Take the risk, don’t overthink it, and step into the discomfort—because the things that feel the most intimidating often turn out to be the most rewarding.
I learned this firsthand when I made the tough decision to leave Chicago and transfer to the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. It wasn’t easy, but it led me to an amazing community of creative, motivated people who helped shape me into who I am today.
The same goes for my new job stepping into something unfamiliar and outside of my comfort zone. It wasn’t the obvious or “safe” choice, but it’s turned out to be one of the most empowering experiences.
Sometimes the biggest growth comes from the moments that feel the most uncertain. Say yes to new opportunities, even if they scare you. Don’t be afraid to close one door to open another. Every risk I’ve taken has taught me something valuable and trusting myself has always led to growth I never saw coming.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
As a recent college graduate, it’s easy to fall into a bit of a funk. Lately, mine has been wondering why I’m not busier with photo sessions. I’ve had a good amount, but I find myself wanting more. Some days, that leaves me feeling a little discouraged.
But I always come back to this: I’m growing every day. I’m learning something new with each step I take, and I’m still just getting started. Everything takes time, and I’m learning to enjoy where I am right now—trusting the process, staying focused on my goals, and reminding myself not to give up.
Whenever those doubts creep in, I think about how far I’ve already come and everything I’ve accomplished. That reminder keeps me moving forward.
