Meet Sondra King

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sondra King. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sondra below.

Hi Sondra, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My parents. I’ve always grown up with parents that worked beyond a physical job. My late father was a Pastor, entrepreneur, a gardener, and outreach enthusiast. Gardening can be tidious, it takes patience, and requires lots of work. The two of them loved it, and the harvest would be worth it all. He and my mother would’ve been married 50 years. My mother is a teacher in her own rights. She loves educating people. whether it envolves ministry, community outreach, children, adults, or gardening tips. She would’ve also made an excellent research developer. I guess that’s where I obtained my skillset of knowledge by watching her. I don’t think I ever saw my parents not working. Not that it was required, but because it was what they both loved to do. They taught me that there was always work to be done. Not only work, but taking pride in what you do. Whether it’s corporately or on your own. My parents also instilled in my sister and I, whatever your hands find to do, do it for the glory and honor of Christ.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Sondra King. I’m a small local black-owned woman business, I have about 11 years of leadership, administrative, and educational background. I’m also a best selling author with 2 solo books that are currently placed in a few of the largest local bookstores in my city. I was also a co-author in an anthology under the direction of well renowned author Dr. Paulette Harper. This particular book gave me recognition, press release, billboard feature, and was also endorsed by motivational speaker Les Brown.

My smoothie business, K& B’s Smooth Nutrition came about for my love of nutrition, health, and wellness. I’ve always loved smoothies, but once I started to experience my own personal health struggles, smoothies became my lifeline. I had a history of migranes, intense acid reflux, and elevated hypertension. My physician decided to place me on medication to treat all of my symptoms. Medication made me groggy, I felt lethargic, and impossible to stay focused on a high demand job. Shortly after taking meds for a few weeks, I participated in a 7 day fast that eliminated certain foods from my diet. I started to notice a difference in how I began to feel within that timeframe. I also implemented drinking smoothies on a daily basis. I followed up with my physician and informed him to allow me time to try a more holisitc approach. In that period, I became a bit overwhelmed with portion control and varations of ingredients that I knew I needed to help improve my diagnosis. One thing I enjoyed were smoothies. I loved the endless possibilites of throwing in various fruits, veggies, protein, and supplements in a blender and making it taste great. I started researching foods and how it impacted your body. I did this close to 10 years. I was so fascinated of the healing powers. Once I maintained my smoothie regimen and made some changes to my diet, along with exercising my doctor was in disbelief. My diagnosis shifted. I realized in that moment that you truly are what you eat!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back I would say my qualities were my business background, my work ethic, and consistency. My advice would be to never be afraid of being the teacher and the student. You can never grow too much. Being open for change, communication, networking, and authenticity helps. I’ve also learned that a closed door can be good, and an open door can be detrimental. Stay true to yourself and avoid people and/or things that don’t serve you, your purpose, or your brand.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
They taught me humility, wisdom, and how to stay grounded. No one person is above the other. No matter what degrees or titles you’ve obtained. Treat others how you want to be treated, but stand your ground and speak up for what is right and wrong. My parents always said, ‘just as easy as it is to go up, God can easily bring you back down.” Arrogance and confidence are two seperate things. Be the change you want to see.
