Meet Sonia Kahlon

We recently connected with Sonia Kahlon and have shared our conversation below.

Sonia, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
This has been a journey of that has taken me substantial effort and introspection. Despite consistently grappling with challenges like low confidence, self-esteem issues, and feelings of being an imposter, I’ve found ways to improve my self-worth.

A key part of my approach involves daily reflection. There’s a certain power in taking time each day to consciously recognize my strengths, acknowledge my positive qualities, and also consider areas for improvement. Writing these thoughts down has been particularly impactful, as it transforms abstract feelings into something tangible and manageable.

Additionally, the support of those who care about me has been instrumental. I am fortunate to have a family that provides unwavering affirmation and support. Their ability to remind me of my worth, especially on days when I struggle the most, has been a cornerstone in building my confidence and maintaining my self-esteem. Their encouragement serves as a constant reminder of the positive impact I have, reinforcing my self-worth and helping me navigate through tougher times.

I think a combination of self-reflection and allowing yourself to see yourself as others see you have been the most important parts of my confidence and self-esteem journey

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

The idea for EverBlume was born from a critical point in my recovery from alcohol use disorder. In 2022, facing a significant personal upheaval, I realized that while I had been sober for five years, my existing coping strategies were insufficient for the new challenges I faced. I sought connection and support in my sober community, attending online recovery meetings. However, I often found myself a silent participant in these sessions, yearning for a more interactive and supportive environment where feedback and direct support were encouraged.

Recognizing the need for a different approach, I became a certified recovery coach. This led me to create EverBlume, a platform offering small group online recovery meetings led by a recovery coach facilitator. What makes EverBlume unique is its emphasis on creating a safe, intimate space for conversation and long-term connections. We match groups based on shared challenges, like life transitions or early sobriety, ensuring that members can relate deeply to each other’s experiences.

This approach caters to those who, like me, are seeking more than just listening – they need to be heard, understood, and supported. At EverBlume, we believe in the power of community and peer support to foster recovery and resilience. Through this platform, we’re not just hosting meetings; we’re building a network of empathy, understanding, and shared strength.

I’ve recently expanded my efforts to reach and support those on their sobriety journey by launching a podcast called “Sisters in Sobriety.” I co-host this podcast with my ex-sister-in-law, and together, we delve into sobriety from a perspective of personal growth.

“Sisters in Sobriety” is more than just a podcast about staying sober; it’s a platform where we share our experiences, insights, and the various tools that have helped us in our journeys. Our focus is on empowering our listeners to become the best versions of themselves. Each episode is crafted to inspire, inform, and offer practical advice that listeners can apply in their daily lives.

The podcast is a testament to the belief that sobriety is not just about abstaining from substances; it’s a pathway to profound personal transformation. We discuss topics ranging from dealing with emotional triggers to building resilience and self-confidence. Our candid conversations aim to provide a sense of camaraderie and hope to those who might feel alone in their struggles.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, the most impactful aspects were centered around rediscovering and embracing my true self. This was a transformative process.

1. Clearing my mind from substances: This was the foundation. Overcoming my addiction to alcohol was a challenging but vital first step. It was like clearing the fog that clouded my vision and judgment. For those early in their journey of discovering their true passion, my advice is to remove unhealthy elements from you life and the is not a linear process; it’s filled with ups and downs. Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection.

2. Taking an honest inventory of my life and values: This step was about introspection and honesty. It required me to look within and evaluate my life choices, values, and beliefs. I had to acknowledge both my strengths and my flaws. For anyone at the beginning of their journey, I recommend setting aside time for self-reflection. Journaling can be a powerful tool here. Ask yourself hard questions about what you value, what brings you joy, and what you want your life to represent. This process is not about judgment; it’s about understanding and acceptance.

3. Having the courage to share my authentic self to help other people: This was the most challenging but rewarding part. Sharing my story, my struggles, and my victories made me vulnerable, but it also opened doors to connect with others on a deeper level. It’s through this vulnerability that I found strength and purpose. For those who are just starting on their journey of honeset connection, my advice is to find safe spaces where you can be open and honest. Sharing your journey not only aids your own healing but can also inspire and support others in their struggles.

In essence, these qualities are interconnected. Clearing your mind creates the space for introspection, which in turn fosters the courage to be authentic and help others. It’s a journey of self-discovery, healing, and ultimately, empowerment. Remember, every small step counts, and you’re not alone in this journey.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Discovering ‘Atomic Habits’ by James Clear was a transformative moment in my journey. As someone who has navigated the complexities of addiction, mental health challenges, and significant personal changes, this book offered me invaluable insights into the power of small, consistent changes. The concept of making tiny, incremental changes helps me maintain sobriety and foster resilience. The book’s emphasis on building positive habits and breaking negative ones aligned seamlessly with the work I have been doing. It reinforced the importance of daily actions in achieving lasting change In essence, ‘Atomic Habits’ has not just been a book for me; it’s been a guide to rebuilding and reshaping life, one small yet powerful step at a time.
