Meet Sonia Tovar

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sonia Tovar. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sonia below.

Hi Sonia, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

Coming from a modest background in a developing country, my journey in California has been profoundly transformative. I’ve had the fortune of meeting incredible people whom I consider to be my angels. From a supportive PE teacher, Mr. Moore, in 8th grade who inspired me to work hard and believe in my potential, to a cherished college friend who always offered the perfect advice when I needed it most, I’ve been surrounded by remarkable individuals who have guided and encouraged me.

My parents, whose sole aim was for me to receive a good education, were instrumental in my journey. Later in my career, I encountered outstanding medical professionals who supported me as I established my business at a young age. Through all these experiences, I learned how small acts of kindness, thoughtful words, and dedication can deeply impact one’s life.

I came to realize that the blessings in my life were bestowed upon me for a reason, preparing me for a greater purpose. As I became more established in my career and began to experience financial stability, I felt a strong desire to give back. I started volunteering at churches, serving Thanksgiving dinners to the homeless, and dedicating time each month to provide food for underserved communities. I also cooked at the Ronald McDonald House for children with cancer and supported homeless children through the Hope Project Alliance in Costa Mesa.

Over the past eight years, as my circumstances allowed, I’ve been able to pursue my passion for medical missions in Africa. These experiences have only deepened my commitment to helping others and reaffirmed the profound impact that kindness and generosity can have on the world.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

As a board-certified OB/Gyn Nurse Practitioner working in a private medical office in Pomona, CA, I am dedicated to serving an underserved community within Los Angeles. As a Hispanic female, my mission is to offer holistic and comprehensive medical care, reflecting my commitment to enhancing the well-being of my community. The fulfillment I derive from helping patients achieve better health and happiness drives me to continually improve and extend my services.

My passion for service led me to participate in a medical mission in Owerri, Nigeria, where I fell deeply in love with the village. For the past eight years, I have dedicated myself to not only addressing medical needs but also contributing to the overall welfare of the community.

I am a co-founder of the Rita Amarikwa Education Foundation, which supports children’s education from primary through high school in Owerri. Recently, as a member of the ACDA Charities Group, I have been able to broaden my philanthropic efforts to include safety initiatives, food drives, road care and maintenance, and medical services for the village.

Through these endeavors, I strive to make a meaningful impact both locally and globally, fostering healthier and happier communities.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Positive Attitude: Maintaining a positive outlook helps you stay motivated and resilient. It enables you to see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than setbacks.

Setting Small Goals: Breaking down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks makes them less overwhelming and allows you to track progress. Celebrate these small victories to maintain motivation.

Emotional Connection: Ensure your goals resonate with your values and passions. When goals have personal significance, you’re more likely to stay committed and overcome obstacles.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

My parents instilled some very valuable principles in me. Hard work, honesty, and education are indeed foundational to personal and professional growth. These values have shaped my life and contributed to my maturity.
Education and hardwork, in particular, had open doors to new opportunities and empower me. It’s also a powerful tool for gaining independence, and it often provides the means to pursue one’s own goals and aspirations.
