We recently connected with Sonja Crosby and have shared our conversation below.
Sonja, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Experience has taught me to persevere through challenges. From being raised by a single mother, serving in the US Army and breaking my leg in basic training but still graduating on time; to being in a life changing car accident and losing my then husband. I also broke my neck, back, right leg in two places and right collarbone. I know that bad things pass and good things happen with faith and perseverance. It is inevitable that bad things are going to happen, but the way we think about those things and how we overcome them, is key to living a good and happy life.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a voiceover talent and actor with 35 years experience in Film, TV, Radio and Corporate Training projects. I love being to work in a field that is so much fun, and now with technology, I am able to work from home. It is very helpful because I’m a wife, mom to a 13 year old girl and full time caregiver to my father with Alzheimer’s. Voiceover gives me the flexibility I need to take care of my family and work in a field I love. My website: www.sonjacrosby.com is a great way for me to display my experience for potential clients.
I wrote a book about my car accident experience and how I met my then husband. It’s title is: “A Heart’s Hole Heals; A journey of positive perseverance.” I wrote it to help me come to terms with what happened, and to hopefully help someone who needs it.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As an actor, dealing with rejection is the skill that is most important. Auditioning constantly and booking intermittently is the job. In between you are marketing yourself through email and social media so that people know what you do and how to book you. Honing your skills as an actor is so important. You have to study trends, stay relevant and aware of everchanging technology. Be a self starter and put the work in every day; research, emails, social media posts, etc. You must also know your worth and be able to say no without feeling guilty.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is one that I can have a great relationship with. One who can provide steady work and whom I can help achieve their marketing goals. I am currently looking into doing work for TV Affiliates as a promo announcer.
