Meet Sonny Shaw

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sonny Shaw. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sonny below.

Hi Sonny, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
By reminding myself that so many great artists and minds were successful and talented without the need of college or a degree. I thought that by going to art school I could be taken seriously as an artist; but from my personal experience seeing how the art school I went to cared more about money than they did education I sought out my own education and taught myself the skills that I have acquired through trial and error. A lot of artist can’t afford to go to school to obtain more education but thankfully with the Internet and the amount of services available to learn these skills so many people have the opportunity now to become the great artist that they want to be without spending thousands of dollars on a college education that will take them decades to pay back for. Artists should not starve to prove themselves worthy of being in the same space as well to do artist with all the rich connections.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a digital photographer and I focus mostly on architecture, lighting, and nature. I’d like to think that what’s special about my photography is that I try to view things from a different angle and capture those. So often I walk by buildings and I noticed things that capture my eye and something about me feels the need to capture these moments even if it’s just a building. In a city where we have so much construction of newer buildings with bland designs and destruction of beautifully unique buildings to replace with Overpriced apartment complexes, I want to do my job to preserve what these buildings look like through my photography.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
N/a

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am absolutely open to collaborating and partnering with fellow photographers or even real estate agents if they’re looking for somebody to photograph their listings as I am a lover of architecture and wants to provide potential clients with photos that really capture their potential new home. I’m also interested in any other artists who are not photographers. I am also looking to move out of the Midwest with my husband and would love to move back to the PNW or anywhere on the west coast, if anyone from that area is reading this please feel free to reach out to me. You can find me on Instagram at liminial_states_photography.
