Meet Sonny Kruger

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sonny Kruger a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonny, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
“Is it worth it?” is a question I ask myself quite a bit. Most things you want in life require some kind of risk. Whether it be writing a story, hosting a podcast, acting, or even talking to someone you’re attracted to. If you sit back and do nothing, you’ll get a result, but it won’t be the one you want. What you wanted will get away from you and then you can always ask yourself “What if?”. I’ve seen things I’ve wanted get away from me because I was too shy or overthought about it instead of actually taking action. I am a man of Faith, so I know it has all led me to where and who I am today. Eventually, I knew if there’s something I want I have to go for it. To at least try! So I decided to put my all into what I want. Yes, I have fallen flat on my face quite a bit. It still happens, but not as much. It brings me back to that question “Is it worth it?” and the answer is yes. I wanna live! I don’t want to say I had all of these dreams and gave up on them because they were hard or I was scared. I plan to make them come true or at least say I gave it my all in my pursuit. Now, most people around me know me as a person who takes risks and isn’t afraid to mess up or be laughed at. That and my love for comics is what inspired my friend Jamie to pitch me the idea for us to do a podcast together. I knew it would be a risk because I had just started directing my first webseries “A Series About A Series” and wanted to be taken seriously, and I knew there was a big chance of me looking silly on a podcast. However, I learned a long time ago how to laugh at myself, so I wasn’t afraid. Plus, I love talking about comic books, so I was more than happy to do it. So, I did take that chance to host a podcast and be silly, and it worked out! To this day, The Code-X Podcast (on The Code-X Station) is going strong and I enjoy it every week. What started as two buddies messing up a lot as we host a podcast watched by a few people has turned into a whole channel with multiple shows, thousands of viewers, and even plenty of good friends who joined the team. As for my series, that’s going great and no one has ever said “Wait. You’re that Code-X Podcast guy. I can’t work with you and I’m going to tell everyone else not to as well.”. If I didn’t take chances, I’d have way less in my life. I took a chance asking a woman out. Seven years later, we’re happily engaged and living together. If I was too scared to write my books, film my series, or host my podcast, I’d still be saying “What if?” as opposed to doing this interview right now.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Writer of many stories including “The Good Priest”, “Tied Up”, “Dangerous Nights”, and the “Dead” trilogy. Actor, most known for my role as Buck Banderas in “A Series About A Series”, which I also wrote, directed, and edited. Plus, let’s not forget that I am the host of The Code-X Podcast with The Code-X Station. With Code-X, I am having a good time with friends talking about all things comic related. Trust me, many of you would be surprised how many things link back to comic books. By the way, I also have a short story called “The Comic Book”. Speaking of writing, that is probably my favorite thing to do. I am addicted to it! I don’t know writer’s block. I have so many stories in my head that some of them, although very interesting and entertaining to see in my mind, I know I won’t be writing for quite a few more years. I enjoy directing, but look to only focus on directing works that I have written. For acting, my favorite roles are those I’ve written since I’ve always seen myself as those characters, but I am looking to take on many other roles in many other productions as well. There are so many interesting diverse characters out there to play. One of these days I’ve got to play one of the superheroes or villains that I’ve been seeing in comic books since I was like three years old.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My courage and Faith to take chances. I know what’s meant to be will be. I have Faith that God will always guide me in the right direction. One thing I have over many people is that I am always willing to learn. I forgot to mention, I’m a learning man who knows there’s always something new to learn every day. Too many people let their ego hold them back and they refuse to listen and learn. As for advice that has helped me out, I look back to some of the many conversations I’ve had with my mom. She taught me that if you don’t stand up and make people hear what you have to say, they will ignore you and walk all over you. That is the truth and I’ve seen that as a person who was very shy before. Now, I always stand up and make people hear what I have to say.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
The Code-X Station is always looking for comic creators and enthusiasts to collaborate with, so feel free to reach out to any of us there! For film, there are still roles open for upcoming episodes of “A Series About A Series” and I would love to eventually make my stories into big-budget shows and movies in the future. I mentioned before that I am looking to act a lot more, so keep me in mind for upcoming roles whether it be in independent or big-budget projects. I still don’t have representation with an agency yet, so now’s your chance to jump on board before someone else beats you to it. Where can you find me? Where I find most of my people, online. With a name like Sonny Kruger, searching my name should lead you practically right to me. For future reference, if “I” was ever to send you a message asking you for money online, some piece of trash is trying to scam you by using my name.
