Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sonya Hernandez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sonya , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
During my childhood, I experienced feelings of isolation and insecurity. To cope with these emotions, I relied on my favorite doll, which I affectionately named Mother. This object provided me with a sense of safety and comfort, and ultimately served as a self-created support system that helped me overcome my fears. Looking back, I now realize that even at the age of five, I had the ability to create a support system that I needed to rely on when external support was not available. This experience has taught me that developing a strong sense of self and creating one’s own support system is crucial, as it allows individuals to rely on themselves even when others are not present. Ultimately, one’s perception of themselves is the most important factor in achieving personal success and happiness.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
During the last 23 years of my career as a Licensed cosmetologist my desire has always been to have a plant-based hair growth product to deliver to those who want to grow fuller, thicker, and longer hair with clean ingredients. Many products today are full of chemicals and other toxic ingredients that work against healthy hair growth. Being in constant contact with toxins can be linked to reproductive issues My recent work with the cancer community only intensified my desire to fill this need. I wanted to make sure that there were clean beauty options that people could turn to pursue hair health and hair restorative care.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that have driven me along my journey are my strong work ethic, passion, and patience. If you are starting early on your journey, you must trust yourself and celebrate every little win. Also, never minimize or compare your progress with others. We all win in our own unique way. Always enter every room as a learner, even if you possess a high level of knowledge.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I am still working on this, but I am learning that it is okay not to complete everything and to pause when I feel overwhelmed. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I stop, take a deep breath, and focus on something outside of myself. Sometimes, even something as simple as taking a walk with my dog and enjoying the beauty of nature helps me focus on what’s most important, which is my peace and harmony. Approaching everything with a peaceful intention has a significantly better outcome.
