We were lucky to catch up with Sophia Demas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sophia, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
It was a transformational process that spanned three careers. When I was in architecture school, all I wanted to do was design beautiful buildings with awe-inspiring spaces. My first job after graduation brought me to Philadelphia to work with my idol, noted futurist and environmentalist R. Buckminster Fuller. That changed everything. I adopted his “more with less” philosophy and focused on providing affordable housing to help solve the world’s shelter shortage. My last stint in architecture was designing biotech laboratories. That was as far from beauty one could get so I started Sophia Demas Couture producing sumptuous evening gowns. Designing beautiful clothes for beautiful women quickly became boring. It was the problem figure that challenged me. My assistant and I created 30 maternity gowns that we would rent out. This put me on the national map and I designed a luxurious line of gowns for super-queen-sized women. I had been observing that some of my full-figured clients exuded confidence and lived life to the fullest while some of my clients were miserable despite their wealth and perfect bodies. It hit me that low self-esteem was the real culprit. I went back to school and got my masters in counseling psychology. I created a 12-workshop program, Living a Fearless Life, which was piloted in the Philadelphia Prison System and administrators there reported positive behavioral changes. Even though these were diverse careers, they shared a common thread—problem solving.
It didn’t seem fair to me that I had loving parents and a cheery childhood and these women’s upbringings were whirlpools of trauma. It was this realization that solidified my true purpose—to help people. Currently I am employed by the Salvation Army as the in-house counselor in a residence that houses ex-trafficked women. I have also written two books. The Divine Language of Coincidence–How Miracles Transformed My Life After I Began Paying Attention, which is about the miracles I’ve experienced since the age of 19. The events were too numerous to cram into one book, so I plucked out the ones that related to death and included them in Consciousness Beyond Death–True Stories of Signs, Messages, and Timing.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I pretty much covered my professional life in the first question. What is truly exciting for me is that both of my books have garnered the attention of scientists. I knew that they studied consciousness but had no idea that they also studied coincidence. I was invited by the the Scientific and Medical Network to join their group of esteemed scientists that study paranormal phenomena as the only non-scientist/academic, and to help plan and participate in their Synchronicity Summit. It was so well received that they are publishing The Playful Universe, a book of essays due to be released at the end of the month and my essay is included (I’m chapter 17)!
Interestingly, the scientists that were interested in my first book showed no interest in the second one. They can write about near-death experiences (NDE) because they’ve been studied for decades but wouldn’t touch my book with a ten-foot pole UNTIL, just before its publication a new scientific field of study has emerged, after-death communication (ADC). Now they’re all interested!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My belief: Divine Intelligence/God wants us to be happy and find our true purpose, and communicates with us in many clever ways—via dreams, a stranger’s message, or by placing coincidences in our path to nudge us via our intuition. The three things we need to do is pay attention, recognize the coincidence/sign, and take action. By taking action on a coincidence we can co-create a miracle with the Divine (exactly what we need at just the right time). If we don’t, it remains just a coincidence.
I hope that the take-away of my story is that extraordinary things happened to an ordinary woman…and if they can happen to me they can happen to you….
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Too numerous to mention. But if I had to pick one that was the most transformational, it’s A Course In Miracles, in which a miracle is defined as a change of perception for the better. It’s been the greatest boost to my spiritual growth. It played one of the most impactful roles in saving my marriage. Both my husband and I were transformed and now living a sublimely happy life….
