We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sophia Ellis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sophia below.
Hi Sophia , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Being the only one in the room that looks like me used to feel heavy, but I learned to shift my perspective. Success, for me, isn’t about proving myself to others—it’s about what makes me happy. When I’m doing work that feeds into my purpose, it naturally ties into one of my passions, and that’s where I find my strength. So instead of worrying about fitting in, I lean into the uniqueness I bring. That mindset not only makes me effective, but it also reminds me that my presence is valuable—and that’s the real success.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a filmmaker, director, and storyteller who believes in the power of purpose-driven art. Today, through my production company MBTL Studios, short for Melanin Behind the Lens, I focus on creating authentic Black narratives that are bold, emotional, and visually cinematic.
What excites me most about what I do is watching stories that once lived only in my head come to life on screen and seeing audiences connect with them in their own way. I love that my work blends creativity with intention, every project I take on has a message or purpose behind it. Whether it’s a horror film like SuperMoon, or a murder-mystery comedy like #WhoKilledJabori, I want people to walk away thinking, feeling, and reflecting.
Currently, I’m expanding MBTL Studios into new creative ventures, including independent features, short films, and multimedia storytelling experiences. I am also producing a short within a collaboration project with other Dallas-Fort Worth filmmakers, Horror film SuperMoon, and #WhoKilledJaboriTheMovie are both in post-production with a release date within the upcoming months. With over 20 original projects in development, my goal is to keep building a legacy that not only entertains but inspires others to tell their own stories fearlessly.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I’d say the three qualities that have had the biggest impact on my journey are resilience, adaptability, and purpose.
Resilience came from life itself. The film industry can test your confidence, patience, and faith, but every challenge has shaped me.
Adaptability came from learning how to wear many hats, cinematographer, director, writer, producer, and doing it with a mindset that every role teaches you something new.
And purpose is what ties it all together. Once I stopped chasing perfection and started aligning my work with what truly fulfills me, telling stories that reflect and empower my community, everything changed.
My advice for anyone early in their journey is this: build your foundation before you chase validation. Learn your craft, find your voice, and don’t be afraid to take up space. And remember, success feels different when it’s tied to your purpose, not just your accomplishments.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always open to collaborating with passionate, purpose-driven creatives. I love working with people who lead with intention and care about storytelling that sparks emotion, conversation, or change. Whether you’re a cinematographer, writer, actor, musician, editor, or brand looking to create something meaningful, I’m interested in building with those who see art as a tool for impact, not just content.
I believe the best collaborations happen when vision and purpose align, so I’m drawn to folks who bring fresh ideas, positive energy, and a shared commitment to excellence.
