Meet Sophia Green

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sophia Green. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Sophia, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I don’t think you find your purpose. I believe your purpose finds you. You just need to be in right place for it to find you. Life is always changing so your purpose can also change.
My purpose found me through my art. It helped me to find my voice.
Life is not a straight path. There’s dips and flows, sometimes you’re up and sometimes your down.
I think the trick is to not get discourage from the journey.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I was born and raised in Southern California. I always had a love for art, drawing inspiration
anywhere – from comics to books to magazines to movies. Being a soft-spoken individual, art has been a voice for me throughout my life as another means to express herself. Many of my art pieces and characters are an extension of who I am and allows mw to be confident and expressive in myself. I chose this art form, to breathe life into something that has none, to find myself and lose myself, to exist in a world of silence, to evoke a feeling in others hopefully inspiring them to find themselves.

I found myself through my art and through my brand Greenstreet. Greenstreet started with me making art about my childhood, to visualize hidden challenges of growing up in that environment. I grew up in white suburbia, as an awkward, skinny black girl, with bad vision. And making this art became cathartic for me. I used my younger self as a kind of muse. I proud and humbled that this character that I created has connected with so many people and their inner child.

You can check out the Greenstreet comic on Instagram @greenstreet2002. In the future I plan makes it into a newspaper comic and share my stories with everyone.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

integrity, curiosity, and audacity.
My advice would be to look inward. Don’t look for validation from other people, even the people most close you. You may never get that validation, but you never needed it. You decide you own success. Pressed but never crushed.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

More than books, movies have played an important role in my development. Specifically the Pixar movie Ratatouille. It was about the artist journey. One of my favorite quotes is “What I say is true. Anyone can cook. But only the fearless can be great”
Making art is difficult, not because of the skill, but the courage and grit you need to have.
