Meet Sophia Sorrentino

We were lucky to catch up with Sophia Sorrentino recently and have shared our conversation below.

Sophia, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I developed my confidence and self-esteem from my relationships. My family has supported and rooted for me since I was a kid, and with their support I’ve become the confident woman I am today. I wouldn’t have the confidence I do without my family cheering me on from the very start. I also have the most supportive and caring group of friends. They’ve been by my side through the good and the bad and have given me the confidence I need when I feel down. My friends have truly helped my self-esteem flourish more.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Dan and I are a retrowave duo called Lavallette. Dan creates the music, I sing the vocals, and we collaborate on writing the lyrics, melodies, and harmonies. Dan and I began producing music together in 2020 when his brother, who I met through a fundraising event, told me Dan needed a vocalist to sing his music. I was very eager to broaden my musical horizons and Dan was eager to release his music. Little did we know this collaboration would continue on and we would become a team who is highly passionate about the music we make. It hasn’t been easy as I have my academics to focus on, Dan just had his third child, and we live in different states, but we’ve still worked diligently and found a way to pursue our passion. Each time we finish a song we are so excited to be one step closer to creating an album. Honestly, every song we create is special to us, as we put so much effort into each song, wanting to release only our best work. We’ve already released one album, American Summer, an album we are extremely proud of, and we are currently working on our second album. Releasing our first album was one of our greatest accomplishments and was very rewarding. We hope to do even better and have more success with our upcoming album.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Drive, patience, and perseverance. The success and fulfillment you strive for won’t happen right away. These things take time and effort. Don’t give up, and if you fail, keep trying. You must be patient, persevere, and continue on with eagerness and diligence. It’s easier said than done, but have the confidence to believe that you are capable. Producing music together from a long distance with our busy lifestyles hasn’t been easy, and Dan and I wouldn’t be where we are today with our music if it weren’t for these qualities.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have done for me is support my music career to their fullest capabilities. Without them, I might not be pursuing music today. They’ve always encouraged me to do my best and to not give up despite how difficult things might get. My parents have come to every single one of my performances since I was 10 years old. They’ve helped me get recording equipment for Lavallette and are proud to share and promote my music to others. They even bought a vinyl record of my first album and they don’t own a record player. A career in music is difficult and taxing at times, and my parents have done everything they can to make it easier for me to pursue my passion. I will forever be grateful to them.
