Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sophie and Izzy Uwins. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Sophie and Izzy with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
We have always been described as hard-working. Our work ethic is probably a combination of our school environment, watching our parents role model, and an innate desire to achieve. We are twins who approach life as a team and often collaborate together on projects so we do support and motivate each other.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
We invented a new writing instrument called The Annotator in order to make studying and schoolwork easier and more efficient. So we set up a small business, SOZY Pencils, to market it. Following the success of that product, we expanded our stationery line and now have a curated range of products designed for students. Our products are unique, we design them ourselves. Our goal has been to come out with 1 new product per year since 2019 and we absolutely love the process of designing, creating, and bringing our products to market. Pop-up events, holiday boutiques and trade shows are our favorite places to share our products, but we also sell direct online at sozypencils.com. Stay tuned for our new product launch in 2025!!!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Thanks for asking!
We would say that passion, resilience, and support are key.
– Passion. We had a vision and believed we could create something unique, which would add value to people’s lives.
– Resilience. It was hard to create something that didn’t exist from scratch, but we stuck with it, and were patient along the way till we got our products right.
– Support. We needed others to help as we couldn’t do it alone. We relied on certain people to give input, feedback, and help coordinate events and opportunities to get exposure.
We absolutely have advice. First, make sure the product would make a difference to people’s lives. For instance, maybe it makes something easier, faster, or more convenient for them, or just makes them happier. Also, make sure your product is differentiated from others. Then, if you have a prototype, test out your product with real people, get feedback, and be open to making improvements along the way.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Our parents believed in us, gave us the opportunity, and supported our ideas along the way. That was HUGE. We couldn’t have done it without their support as they helped with pulling in resources, manufacturing and marketing.
We’ve learned so much going through the process of building a product and brand from scratch that it has inspired us to do more.
