Meet Sophie Furman

We were lucky to catch up with Sophie Furman recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Sophie, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

My sense of purpose started from always wanting to make a difference, whether for kids everywhere or for pups in need. I worked for various nonprofits where I helped those who were hungry and kids from disadvantaged backgrounds. In my illustration work as well, I want to help those who are struggling, and serve a larger purpose.

Also, when we adopted my little pup studio assistant, Cookie, my sense of purpose became bigger, mostly seeing what a burst of sunshine and cuteness Cookie is!

Right now, there are so many kids and pups in need, and helping them makes it all so much more inspiring!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a Brooklyn based illustrator for children’s books, publications, and companies. I am really excited to be doing lots of pet pawtrait events, and as well as various client projects. I am very grateful to have hired on a team member recently – my pup studio assistant Cookie! I also tutor! My favorite thing right now is also hanging out all I can with my two small nephews!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My favorite quality for working on my own is for sure tenacity and passion! I would tell any folks starting out in illustration to keep going, and to never lose that love for drawing!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Yes, I would love to connect with anyone who is looking for a tutor in illustration! I teach especially children’s book illustration, covering everything from foundations, to the business of illustration. Reach out to me at [email protected] for more information!
