Meet Sophie Hami

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sophie Hami a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Sophie , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

Being the only one in the room who looks like me has taught me a lot about resilience, self-trust, and the power of perspective. At first, it was challenging — I had to overcome internal doubts and external assumptions. But over time, I learned to turn that experience into a strength. I began to see my unique background and identity as an asset — it allowed me to bring fresh ideas to the table, empathize with others in meaningful ways, and challenge the status quo when needed.

But I also remind myself: I’m not the first, and I won’t be the last. There were people before me who stood out, who were different — who paved the way in their own quiet or bold ways. And if I’m in the present moment holding that space, I can use it to build connection, to open doors, and to make space for others.

Even now, my heart still beats fast, and I get butterflies in my stomach before and while I speak. But I remind myself of the reason I’m there — of the purpose behind my presence. And that always brings the courage back. It grounds me and helps me show up fully, knowing that being the ‘only one’ doesn’t make me less — it just makes me a bridge and I take this role seriously.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m the founder of Henna Chakra, where art, movement, and mindfulness come together to create meaningful, joyful experiences. I’m a henna artist, yoga instructor, and workshop facilitator — and what lights me up is creating spaces that invite connection, culture, and community.

Through henna, I share the beauty and storytelling of a traditional art form while making it accessible and joyful for all ages. It’s more than just body art — it’s an invitation to slow down, to celebrate, and to connect across cultures.

Through yoga and creative movement, I design empowering sessions that blend the wisdom of yoga with the realities of modern life. I often bring in Bollywood-inspired dance flows to spark playfulness and self-expression — creating a fun, engaging atmosphere in workshops.

What feels most special to me is that I’m still learning — always. I teach so I can learn. Every session, every person I meet through this work brings new insight and connection. At the core of Henna Chakra is the belief that creativity and presence can transform any moment into something memorable and meaningful.

What’s new? I’m expanding my cultural wellness offerings —workshops, art-infused yoga sessions, and vibrant community events. I ’m always excited to collaborate with organizations, educators, and community leaders who want to bring something thoughtful, fun, and inclusive into their spaces.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Rooted Creativity:
Having a creative spirit has always guided me — from drawing henna as a child to designing engaging workshops. But what’s made it truly powerful is staying rooted in my culture, my story, and the communities I serve. Creativity becomes meaningful when it’s connected to intention and authenticity.

Adaptability and Deep Listening:
Working across different spaces — from corporate teams to school classrooms to elder communities — has taught me how to truly listen, feel the energy in the room, and adjust in real time. Every group is different. What makes a session land isn’t a perfect plan but being present and willing to shift.

Commitment to Growth (with Humility):
I’ve been teaching since I was 16, but I still approach every class, every workshop as a learner. I teach so I can learn. That mindset has helped me evolve and stay connected to the heart of my work.

Advice:
Be committed and Become Capable
Stay curious and Be Genuine in everything you do

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Yes, I’m always open to meaningful collaborations! I love partnering with folks who are passionate about creating inclusive, creative, and culturally rich experiences — whether that’s through wellness, education, the arts, or community engagement.

I’m especially excited to collaborate with:

Schools, universities, and educators who want to bring mindfulness, movement, or cultural arts into their programming.

Corporate teams and leaders looking to host thoughtful wellness sessions, cultural events, or creative workshops.

Community organizations, wellness spaces, and event curators who value connection, intentionality, and joy.

If you’re creating something with heart and want to explore how we can co-create together — whether through henna art, yoga, dance, or cultural storytelling workshops (IRL or online) — I’d love to hear from you!
