Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sora Won. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sora, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
For me, seeking advice from my family and friends has been immensely helpful in shaping my understanding of what truly matters. Their perspectives have provided clarity during times of uncertainty, allowing me to see my strengths and passions from a different angle.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Sora Won, and I’m a graphic designer based in San Francisco, currently working as a marketing graphic designer at Aer, a travel gear company in the area. My background in fashion has equipped me with invaluable experience from my time working with global brands like Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Ferragamo. This exposure has deepened my understanding of how customers interact with brands, enabling me to create marketing materials that are both engaging and resonate with consumers.
At Aer, I design a variety of marketing assets, including mailers, social media content, and newsprint layouts. Additionally, I contribute to website and packaging design while overseeing our seasonal campaigns. As the sole graphic designer at the company, I try to ensure that our brand’s messaging remains consistent and engaging across all platforms. This diverse range of responsibilities allows me to effectively shape our visual identity and strengthen our connection with consumers.
I am passionate about crafting graphic designs that effectively communicate our brand message and connect with our audience. It fascinates me to observe how people interact with visual elements, and I strive to produce graphics that they encounter daily, efficiently conveying our brand’s messages.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey as a graphic designer, I believe three qualities have been particularly impactful: empathy, versatility, and simplicity.
Empathy is essential for creating designs that resonate with audiences. Understanding people’s experiences and emotions will allow you to create work that reflects their thoughts and feelings, enhancing their lives in subtle yet meaningful ways. By fostering empathy, you can design pieces that invite reflection and create a space for viewers to connect on a personal level.
I value simplicity in design. I’ve found that the most effective messages are often conveyed with clarity and straightforwardness. Emphasizing minimalism in your designs is crucial for ensuring that your messages are clear and accessible. By stripping away unnecessary complexity, you can focus on the core idea you want to communicate. This approach makes your work more approachable and allows a wider audience to engage with your designs without needing specialized knowledge.
Versatility is crucial for graphic designers in today’s fast-paced world. With new tools and features constantly emerging, it’s essential to stay adaptable and open to learning. A diverse skill set not only enhances your design work but also prepares you for unexpected opportunities and tasks that may arise. By embracing versatility, you can tackle a variety of projects and keep your creative approach fresh.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been my ability to effectively lead and execute design projects at Aer, significantly contributing to the brand’s marketing and overall success. One of my notable achievements was spearheading the design and execution of our seasonal campaigns, which not only enhanced our brand visibility but also drove customer engagement. I successfully conceptualized and directed photoshoots for new product launches, including our recent carry-on luggage, which has been well-received and even featured in the prestigious MoMA Design Store. This project taught me the importance of visual storytelling and how strategic imagery can resonate with our target audience. Additionally, I revamped our social media strategy, which resulted in a notable increase in engagement. My designs and content planning helped grow our following by around 25%, showcasing my ability to create impactful visual communications that align with our brand identity.
Looking ahead, I will play a crucial role in the upcoming Black Friday and holiday season campaigns. These projects are crucial, as they represent some of the most significant promotional events of the year. I will focus on designing compelling social media content that captures attention and drives engagement, reinforcing our brand message and connecting with consumers during this vital sales period. The success of these campaigns throughout the year will be
pivotal in maintaining customer interest and boosting sales, further demonstrating the importance of our visual communications strategy in achieving our business objectives
