We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sorrel Kay Cherie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sorrel, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
We didn’t let that stop us because we were confident in what we were doing and what we bring to the table. While there is comfortability when there are others that look like you, we were not looking at the room to make us comfortable. We understood that us belonging in the room is based on our uniqueness, personality, and skillset. We never want to be intimidated by the fact the we are the only ones in the room that look like us. Our different abilities and backgrounds are part of what qualifies us to be in the room.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We are a mobile pole studio servicing the DFW area. We specialize in private lessons, small group classes and pole parties. Our business model is unique because we offer you a chance to explore pole dance and pole fitness from the comfort of your own home. We teach beginners to more advanced students and we customize for your goals and your needs. For parties we bring the party to you! We bring the poles, the skills, the fun, and a unique experience all your own.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Speaking from a fitness perspective, first and foremost the most important quality is falling in love with the journey and loving yourself where you are at. Being harsh or mean to yourself or judgmental about where you’re at versus where you think you should be doesn’t give you the grace to celebrate the small wins and acknowledge and embrace the progress made.
Resilience and determination in reaching your goals is another important skill or quality. Not just in fitness, but also in business and in life. Things happen. Setbacks, missteps, injuries, etc. Pushing through those mishaps and not giving up because things aren’t going the way we want or the way we thought is how we persevere and reach our goals. We regroup and work the problem to get back on track or to reach our desired outcome.
As an instructor or trainer, it is also important to understand that this is a journey and you have to be able to coach others through those high and low points. We have to be able to praise the highs and keep the students excited about what’s to come, while being able to support and encourage them through the lows and keep them focused on why they are here and where they are at in their own personal journey. Understanding that everyone’s journey is different and probably won’t look exactly like your neighbor’s plays a crucial part in managing your classroom and ensuring the success of your students.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
We believe that it is important to be confident and to stand firm on your strengths because that is a big part of who you are and becomes part of what your business is known for. However, you also need to work on your weaknesses so that you don’t limit yourself in business and in life. While it is important to master the things that you are passionate about and stronger at it is also important to work on things or areas that you know you are weak in especially when they can or do co mingle with the things that you are passionate about. Now, we are not saying that you try and master everything because that is not realistic and it can cause your focus to be spread too thin but, just ignoring or negating areas where know you are weak will not allow you to grow and progress as much in business and in life. It can also place you in a box where you are only known or expected to do one thing. So, do the one thing you do very well but still make time to grow yourself and work to strengthen where you know you are weak.
From experience I (Sorrel) had the upper body strength to do and perform a lot of upright moves easily but I wanted to go upside down. However I have a fear of heights that if I did not work to overcome that weakness I would not be hanging by my toes now. I still love upright moves especially elbow grip stuff and I still work to expand my repertoire of pole skills. Holding onto my fear of heights I would have never discovered that I love to flip off of the pole, I have never done a flip off the pole but on the pole is one of my favorite things to do now.
