We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Soufside Dre a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Soufside, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
To be honest , I was born with it. I believe my resilience comes from all the pains and struggles I endured in my life. I know that when you have went through so much you have no choice but to either pull through and keep fighting or lay down and die. I was born to do what Im doing and that is creating.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Born De’Andre Shields-Walker, Dre grew up listening to Lil Wayne, Future, Chief Keef, Michael Jackson, and Lil Uzi Vert as his inspirations. He grew up surrounded by people in the scene & he always dreamed about getting started in the industry. The motivation Dre needed to focus on music was the comment made by now-manager JayBender, who told Dre that he had his own “swag” and uniqueness to his voice. Following this, he met and worked with artists Clayco & R2H. Dre released his first official album “Mr. Soufside” on June 17th, 2022. Prior to the drop, Dre’s mother passed away, he became homeless, and he went through his first heartbreak. This motivated him for the project. His single “maDmaXX” scored his first breakthrough in the underground. Around Mr. Soufside’s drop, Dre formed the collective Get Bands, which featured artists Pmoney & Yung Speed. Shortly after, he developed a new persona whom he named “Krashhh”. This persona is an energetic, reckless-and aggressive alter ego. Krashhh’s success could be observed in songs like “D3MN” and “Evel”, and after this he began to put all his focus into his music.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Persistence, Authenticity & Vision. My best advice is to be true to yourself and what you see for yourself. Only you know whats best for you. Dont believe the hype or feed into it
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My brothers & my team. I couldn’t do any of this without them. They always are by my side and want the best for me. They always push me to be the best version of myself. They never let me give up even in the hardest moments of life and my career.
