Meet Spencer Burson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Spencer Burson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Spencer, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

The moment I can say when we developed our confidence was at our first show. It was a bonfire event hosted by our school so it was big deal to us as this was the first time our school would hear us. We rehearsed as much as possible even hours before the gig to make sure our setlist was perfect. However, when we arrived, that’s when the school let us know that are setlist wasn’t approved and we would have to shrink it down to just 3 songs instead of the 6 we were promised and to keep it under 15 minutes. We all got pretty nervous because of this; it wasn’t what we had rehearsed for. But when we plugged in our guitars and counted off our tunes, it was like we had been doing this for a lifetime. I had the confidence to walk out on the stage because I knew I could trust my band mates to play well and give a good show and our first gig revealed that to me as despite the adversity we had an amazing gig.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

The Calmets are the product of four friends turned musicians who make music for the fun of live entertainment. We aspire to be good showmen and leave the crowd with a sense of a night well spent. Our sound is mostly comprised of rock and roll but alternative sounds as well so if any interest in that come to one of our shows, which are posted on our Instagram, The Calmets. We also have a Dave.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

By far the most impactful quality that we have gained was being able to have an amazing teacher, Doctor Walton. He was able to teach us about the fundamentals of music and composition as well as playing live. Other areas of importance would be that we all study a wide array of musical genres which definitely influences our sound and that we have a great attitude to what we do. I’d advice anyone trying to be a live musician to participate in the music scene even it costs money because if you want to people to come to your shows, you may as well go to others. When musicians stop going to other musicians; that’s when the scene is dead.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

As live musicians, we are always looking for people to collaborate with whether to book them on a show or to make connections within the Tucson music scene. We would love to collaborate with any musician who would be interested in have a show with us cause we’ve played with about everything the music scene has had to offer, From psychedelic rock to punk and even Gypsy jazz.
