We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Spencer Hill. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Spencer below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Spencer with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I believe that my work ethic stems from the group of friends and colleagues that I have surrounded myself with over the last 5 years. I think that it is important in life to never be the most successful person in your closest group of people, but also never be at the bottom of the pyramid either. Somewhere in the middle keeps you motivated and driven to succeed in life, and I will always keep that in mind. You can strive to be the best while still helping your close friends and colleagues to be more successful as well.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
While most people grew up wanting to be an astronaut, doctor or firefighter, my answer has always been the same: a professional race car driver.
My name is Spencer Hill and I am a first generation race car driver from Albuquerque, New Mexico. I began my racing career before I even had a drivers license at the age of 8. After experiencing the thrilling speeds and flirting with the imminent danger that it brings, I knew immediately after my first race that racing cars is what I would want to do for the rest of my life. Fast forward to today, I have had the incredible opportunity to win hundreds of races and dozens of championships across a multitude of different divisions and styles of cars across the entire United States. I currently race a car called a Sprint Car, which are open-wheel race cars designed for short, oval, or circular dirt or paved tracks. They are known for their power-to-weight ratio, which is often better than Formula 1 cars. While I am currently moving through the ranks at the grass roots level of the sport, my goal has always been to make it to NASCAR, the pinnacle of auto racing in North America.
Life in the fast lane stays busy, but above all I am grateful for the partnerships I have been able to make in my community and the opportunity to give back to many deserving charities and organizations along the way.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three major qualities that all successful race car drivers need aside from their skill behind the wheel are a fantastic work ethic, an ability to perservere through difficult times, and a unique personality that stands out from the rest. Your work ethic is the most important because it is what separates the good from the great. I came from an average middle class family with no experience with racing whatsoever. Since I was the first one in my family to attempt racing, it made it very difficult to catch up to some of my competitors who were second, third, or even fourth generation racing families with a ton of experience and mechanical abilities. I worked hard, did my homework, and have closed that gap to ensure that I am around the sport for many years to come. Perseverance is very important as well, because you will lose many many more races in your life than you will win. If you keep your positivity and continue to move forward through the lows, it will make the highs mean that much more. Lastly, I believe a unique personality is crucial in your career path to stand out from the crowd. You are your own brand, and it is important to remember that along the way.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Partnerships are a key part of success in motorsports because they help to provide teams and drivers with the financial support, resources, and exposure they need to compete. I am always looking to grow my network and create partnerships with a goal of asking those businesses and individuals what I can do to help them, rather than what they can do for me. Anyone who is interested in more information on how to become a part of my team can find that at SpencerHillRacing.com.
