Meet Spencer Joseph

We were lucky to catch up with Spencer Joseph recently and have shared our conversation below.

Spencer, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

I keep my creativity alive by traveling and taking scenic walks, especially during certain times of the day when I feel most inspired, like early mornings. These moments help reignite my imagination. Movies are also a big influence—they spark new ideas and push me to explore different visual approaches in my own work. It’s all about finding the right mix of fresh experiences and regular inspiration.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a photographer, videographer, and art director, primarily focused on commercial work, including swimwear and product photography. My work is centered around creating images that don’t just look good but evoke a feeling or tell a deeper story. One of the most exciting aspects of my job is the ability to visually capture the essence of a brand or model in a way that feels personal yet impactful. Whether I’m working on a campaign for a brand or doing creative shoots with up-and-coming talent, my goal is always to build a world within the image that resonates with the viewer.

Right now, I’m excited about expanding my portfolio and diving into more creative collaborations with brands. I’m constantly seeking new ways to push boundaries in visual storytelling, exploring fresh aesthetics and unique concepts.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, three key qualities or skills that had the most impact on my journey are adaptability, creativity, and strong communication.

1. Adaptability: The ability to adjust and evolve has been crucial, especially in the fast-changing world of photography and media. Learning to embrace new techniques, technologies, and trends has helped me stay relevant and continuously improve my craft. My advice is to stay curious and open to learning—don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and experiment with new approaches or tools.
2. Creativity: This may seem obvious in a creative career, but the ability to think outside the box and develop a unique visual style has been key to setting myself apart. For those just starting, it’s important to study others you admire but also spend time finding your own voice. Experiment without fear of failure—it’s through this process that you truly discover your creative identity.
3. Communication: Whether it’s collaborating with clients or directing models, clear and effective communication is essential. It not only makes the process smoother but also ensures the final product aligns with the vision. For beginners, I’d recommend working on your interpersonal skills and learning how to articulate your creative ideas clearly to clients and collaborators.

For those early in their journey, the best way to develop these skills is through practice and real-world experience. Seek feedback, engage in collaborative projects, and always keep pushing yourself to grow and improve.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Yes, I’m definitely looking to collaborate with folks in various creative fields. I’m particularly interested in working with swimwear brands, perfume companies, stylists, models, makeup artists, and set designers. I’m also eager to partner with filmmakers for visual projects that tell compelling stories and push creative boundaries.

Additionally, I have a background in sound and music, so I’m always open to exploring other art forms like music videos or multimedia projects where different disciplines intersect. If you’re a brand, creative professional, or artist interested in collaborating, feel free to reach out through my website or social media. I’d love to discuss ideas and see how we can create something exciting together!
