Meet Spencer Nelson

We were lucky to catch up with Spencer Nelson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Spencer , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I didn’t initially envision myself as a freelance graphic designer and business owner of Spenceless Designz. However, it was the faith and encouragement from both my family and strangers that kickstarted my journey and kept me going. Their belief in my abilities served as my driving force. It’s this support and the joy of expressing creativity that eventually led me to discover my true purpose in graphic design.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I specialize in using intriguing textures in my graphic designs, which blend both vintage and modern styles. Art has always been my passion, and I pursued graphic design in school. Since then, I’ve continued to learn and adapt to new techniques and technologies.

I’m also skilled in using social media to connect with clients and art enthusiasts. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with artists from various fields, which has been a rewarding experience.

But what truly drives my creativity is producing art for music, such as album cover designs and merchandise. I’m dedicated to crafting designs that fuse the best of the past and present, and I’m particularly enthusiastic about creating artwork that complements the world of music.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, there are three key qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have had a profound impact:

Continuous Learning – The ability and willingness to keep learning and evolving have been crucial. Graphic design is an ever-changing field with new tools and techniques emerging regularly. Staying curious and open to learning has been essential. My advice to those starting their journey is to embrace lifelong learning. Take courses, read design books, follow industry trends, and always seek to expand your skill set.

Adaptability – Adaptability is another vital quality. The design industry can be unpredictable, and client needs vary greatly. Being able to pivot and adapt to different styles, projects, and client expectations is essential. To develop adaptability, work on personal projects that challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and experiment with different design styles.

Effective Communication – Graphic designers often work closely with clients and teams. Being able to effectively communicate ideas, concepts, and design choices is crucial. It’s not just about creating beautiful visuals; it’s about understanding and conveying the client’s message. To improve communication skills, practice explaining your design choices and actively seek feedback from others.

My advice to those early in their journey is to stay committed, patient, and persistent. Building a career in graphic design takes time and effort. Keep refining your skills, build a strong portfolio, network with others in the industry, and don’t be afraid to take on challenging projects. Embrace failures as learning opportunities, and always strive for improvement. Lastly, stay passionate and true to your unique style; it’s what will set you apart in the long run.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I encounter overwhelming moments, I have a set of effective strategies to regain focus and clarity. One of my go-to methods is taking short walks, which can provide a refreshing break and help clear my mind.

Additionally, I find that hitting the gym or participating in a yoga class can be excellent stress-relievers. Sometimes, simply enjoying a meal away from the hustle and bustle is enough to temporarily step back from the chaos and regain composure.

In summary, these are the practical approaches I use to address overwhelm, allowing me to return to my tasks with renewed energy and a clearer perspective.
