We recently connected with Spitfire Sparks and have shared our conversation below.
Spitfire, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
This has always been one of the hardest skills to maintain in my opinion. Self-discipline is the cornerstone of achieving any major goals or dreams in life. You must be consistent, and you must do the things you know need to get done.
Self-discipline is a continuous process. It’s something that you work on, and practice, everyday. First and foremost, it’s finding and acknowledging the things you want and need to get accomplished, and the steps necessary to get there. Though it may take some time to figure it all out, this is the easy part. What follows is action, and things are always easier said than done.
Putting your motives to action is the hardest thing to do. Everybody has dreams, everybody has goals, but convincing yourself that following through is the only option is where everything separates. Being an independent artist I have tasked myself with production, recording, writing, mixing, marketing, development, artwork, booking, you name it. It’s constant learning, and a never ending feeling that there’s so much more to learn.
The important part is not to feel like you know everything, but to dedicate yourself to the continued learning and growth. One way I find helpful to manage the self-discipline is to be more vague in what I expect from it. Rather than sitting down going “I NEED TO WRITE A SONG TODAY OR ELSE.” I approach everyday with the mindset that I need to put in the work and contribute something, and allow my mood and thoughts to fill in the spot from there. Sometimes you don’t feel like doing that ONE thing, and the disconnect comes from feeling that and then surrendering to it and saying “well I just won’t do anything today.” Instead, you must pivot, and think outside the black and white to find something that still fulfills your goal without feeling like such a burden, yet still rewarding you that feeling of accomplishment and consistency.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Spitfire Sparks. I am an artist focused on creating music with a message. Whether to spark inspiration, gratitude, remembrance, focus, or energy, the overall goal of my music is to Ignite Your Mind. You can expect to find a vast array of varying sounds and styles always intertwined with clever lyrical wordplay and a message that extends beyond the words to a beat.
The most exciting part of this career has been the testimonials and stories people tell me about how my music has affected them. Music has always been a huge part of my life and has shaped experiences and moments throughout. To hear that my music has had that same effect on people has been an immensely rewarding and fueling experience.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
As stated prior, self-discipline is one of the skills that I think is most useful in accomplishing anything you set your mind to. Consistency is another skill that goes hand in hand but is essential in executing your ideas and creating the routine of accomplishment. Finally, you must have perseverance. There are a few one in a million stories of people getting lucky and having the success just happen to them without their planning, but in the majority of success stories, a large portion of them is failure. Failure is something that everybody hates, nobody wants to be apart of, yet is inescapable in the path of learning. Everybody will have failures, and learning to handle them instead of allowing them to overtake you or subtract from the work you’re doing is imperative to finding success down the road.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Confidence. Confidence is a hard trait to obtain when you are starting a new career or skill. One of the hardest parts of starting a new career, skill, or hobby is seeing how much there is to learn and how many people seem to be “better” at it. There becomes many different bouts with doubt along the way, wondering if it’s the correct path or worth the investment/time, and at the end of it all, only you can make that decision. With that though, when you do decide it is worth it, and you do start to see results, growth, ease, and improvement occur, those all build confidence. It helps you establish that centering, that belonging that comes with coming into your own after having to navigate the waters of unsureness. This year has brought a ton of growth to both the music and I, and it translates heavily. Listening to the newest releases compared to even two or three years ago is incredible; the comfortability I have in my craft has been elevated tenfold, and I’m still getting better everyday!
