We were lucky to catch up with Spooki recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Spooki, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose through music! It was the one thing that felt good to me and was consistently loved.
I started the “Spooki” project as I set out into the world with music as my guide, immersing myself in the industry, community, and lifestyle.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Howdy my friends! My name is Spooki 🙂
I am a Disco/Soulful House music artist from the Island of Kauai. I host events on the West Coast of USA and also run a record label “Higher Spirits” to share more groovy, funky, soulful House music with the world.
My mission is to bring more uplifting and impactful music to the Dance music scene, and encourage people to love themselves and those around them.
In addition to the music I release as an artist, I also operate as an A&R, working with other artists to help improve, support, and promote their own music to help them grow in our community.
Additionally, I work as an audio engineer (providing mixing and editing services to larger artists) and throw live shows and events to bring the Disco House sound directly to the people.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Hmm… great question.
I would say that #1, above anything else, is the willpower to stick with something and never give up. I think many other big artists would agree that the most important thing to finding success is to simply “keep going”.
This industry can take a very long time to find your way in, but your journey never ends until YOU let it end!
For #2, I guess that passion and love are really key. You have to do this because you really love it, and because music has played a major role in your life.
So many people try to get involved in music (especially DJ’ing) because it is trendy/cool with a low bar for entry… But many of these people fizzle out over time because they aren’t truly invested in the love of the process. you gotta really love it!
The #3 thing that has impacted my journey is my curiosity and desire to explore the more technical sides of music, audio, and engineering. Being able to understand sound, audio mechanics, and mixing have allowed me to grow skills that many other artists/musicians don’t have… And it’s been a very helpful along the way, both inside and outside of the studio.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My biggest challenge in this industry is definitely social media, and the consistent demand for “content”!
Music has always been my creative outlet. It is the medium through which I express myself and communicate with people… So adjusting to an industry and audience that is more engaged in content and online personas has been a big hurdle.
Nonetheless, I love that there are people out there finding my music naturally, and that I can share my art without having to shove it down people’s throats 🙂
