Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Spotlight Shanell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Spotlight Shanell, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Honestly, I didn’t have much confidence until I got to college and started doing radio. It was easy to be myself behind a microphone where no one could see me. After doing radio for a while, I became comfortable with my personality everywhere without even noticing. Once I saw how receptive to me people were, I was able to then get on camera and do it and here we are. I guess it just comes with time and comfortability.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I go by Spotlight Shanell and I am a social media influencer. With over half a million followers on TikTok, I created a name for myself and has gained a huge support system including people from all over the world known as “The Mafia”. I never thought I’d be a social media influencer. Ever since I was a child I knew I wanted to be on TV but I always thought I’d be an actress or something first. God definitely had other plans for me. I started off telling crazy stories about things I’ve been through in life and my following began to increase drastically. In a world full of fiction, authenticity is such a breath of fresh air to people who actually live in the real world and go through real problems. That is how I was able to get to where I am today. I don’t only show the good. I show the bad and the ugly as well. I don’t always “get cute” to get on camera because I don’t walk around “cute” 24/7. People who watch me love to see that I live a regular life just like them.
In addition to daily vlogs and story times, I do wig reviews and installs as well which is how I was able to quit my job and become a full-time influencer. I spend most of my days recording myself doing my hair and makeup and posting it on TikTok which is also something people love to watch. I’m currently working on building my YouTube channel with my brother, Rodrigo. He and I do lots of content together and it is a huge part of my platform. Once we get that up and running I know it’s only a matter of time before we become “big- time” influencers.
We’re currently working on merchandise for our supporters which should be ready for purchase by the end of February 2024.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Hmm. I would say consistency, patience and the way you perceive things were the main things I had to master to get to where I am. Without consistency, you’re going nowhere. Whatever it is that you want to do in life, you must be consistent if you want to see results. In order to see those results, you must be patient. Nothing worth having will come easy. It takes time to build a great foundation. People want to see results by the second week and it just isn’t that simple. Take your time and just do the work. God (or whoever your higher power may be) will meet you halfway and do the rest. Perception is something I’m just now mastering and it’s changed my life drastically. There’s good and bad in almost every situation. If we spend our time focusing on the negative, you’ve missed everything that was positive and now you’re just a negative person with negative thoughts spreading negative energy. Always look at the glass as being half full rather than half empty.
