Meet Stacey Blackwell

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stacey Blackwell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stacey below.

Stacey, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

My purpose with writing was rooted in my vibrant imagination and my unique childhood experiences. Growing up as the only girl, I had to entertain myself, which sparked my creativity. Writing became my escape, a way to channel my thoughts, emotions, and ideas, while reading brought me comfort and clarity. It seemed like my passion for storytelling was always a part of me—something natural and therapeutic that evolved into a powerful purpose to create stories that connect with and entertain others.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m Stacey Blackwell, a passionate storyteller and creator, dedicated to bringing bold and unique narratives to life. As a writer, producer, and self-published author of 17 books, my focus is on creating works that resonate deeply with audiences. My latest project, Commandments of a Female Hustler, is a gritty TV series that explores the lives of three young women navigating ambition, betrayal, and survival. It’s a story that flips the script on traditional hustle narratives by centering strong, dynamic female leads.

What excites me most about this project is its unapologetic authenticity and its ability to connect with viewers who love layered, dramatic storytelling akin to shows like Power. This series is unique in its focus on female hustlers and the complexities of their relationships and choices.

Beyond this series, I’m also a self-published author who believes in making books accessible, with most of my novels priced affordably to encourage readers from all walks of life to dive into my worlds. While my books haven’t seen massive sales yet, I’m constantly exploring ways to reach new audiences and make a mark in the literary world.

On the horizon, I’m excited to expand the reach of Commandments of a Female Hustler. I’m working on building a YouTube channel to further connect with fans and pitching the series to networks like Apple TV+ and even icons like Jada Pinkett Smith and George Pelecanos. My ultimate goal is to find a network home for this series where it can thrive and impact viewers worldwide.

At the heart of everything I do is a love for storytelling and creating spaces where diverse voices are amplified. My journey hasn’t been without challenges, but it’s those challenges that fuel my hustle and creativity every day.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, three qualities that had the most impact on my journey are resilience, creativity, and vision.

Resilience: Challenges are inevitable, especially in creative industries. From managing setbacks in self-publishing to funding and producing my TV series Commandments of a Female Hustler, resilience has been my anchor. For anyone starting out, my advice is to embrace failure as part of the process. Every setback teaches you something invaluable—so keep pushing forward, no matter what.

Creativity: My ability to dream big and bring bold, unique ideas to life has been the heartbeat of my career. I’ve always found inspiration in the world around me, turning observations into relatable, authentic stories. To develop creativity, I’d encourage people to explore the unfamiliar—read widely, watch different genres, and surround yourself with diverse perspectives.

Vision: Having a clear sense of where I want to go and staying committed to that vision has kept me on track. I knew early on that I wanted to tell stories that stand out and make an impact, which has guided my decisions every step of the way. For those just beginning, take the time to define your goals and write them down. Don’t be afraid to adjust your path, but always keep your “why” in mind.

The journey isn’t easy, but with these qualities and a willingness to keep learning and evolving, you can build something extraordinary. Start small, stay consistent, and surround yourself with people who believe in your dreams as much as you do.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

Over the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been embracing the business side of my creative work. As a writer and producer, I’ve always been deeply connected to the artistic side of storytelling, but I realized that bringing my vision to life requires a solid foundation in planning, budgeting, and marketing.

From managing the finances for Commandments of a Female Hustler to refining my pitching strategies to networks, I’ve learned to think like a businesswoman while staying true to my creative roots. I’ve also improved my organization and accounting skills, ensuring that every dollar is accounted for and every decision is intentional.

This growth has taught me the importance of balance—between creativity and strategy, passion and practicality. It’s helped me not only push my projects forward but also set the stage for scaling my work and reaching larger audiences.
