Hi Stacey, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
Overcoming or learning how to avoid burnout can be challenging. It’s like feeling guilty for putting yourself on timeout. However, it’s a must and I found this out the hard way. While chasing your dreams, building an empire, making money moves, and evolving are all important, taking breaks, and rest are just as important. What I have learned over the years being an entrepreneur is that to be successful in your business is to successful in your personal as well. How can you be well in one area of your life and not in another? Taking breaks, resting, and doing self-care are some ways to avoid burnout. Learning how to manage your time can be another helpful way. As an entrepreneur, we can create our schedules. So while taking those meetings, doing presentations, and networking, we have to make ourselves a priority too.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As an owner of a sunglass business, I wanted to do more with it and expand on it when it comes to the importance of eye care. After all, seeing is one of our five senses. As I was attending my first business conference, I was listening to one of the speakers and she posed the question – How does my business impact the community? After a few minutes had passed, I wanted to create fun ways to teach children of my community the importance of eye care, especially with kids having attachments to so many devices nowadays. When I was growing up all we were told was not to sit too close to the TV. In more recent times these kids not only have a TV, but they also have phones, tablets, iPads, and any other device that requires WIFI and charging lol. So I decided to make this my way of helping out in my community. This is just in the idea phase so please go like and follow me on social media @Shadezofstacey on IG and Shadez of Stacey on Facebook to get the scoop on how we launch this plan!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe the three most important key factors are learning time management, having your finances in order, and having a healthy circle of friends and family who want you to succeed. These are all great skills to develop while being in business. Time management is awesome because you become more aware of how you are spending your time. For example are wasting time scrolling online social media when you can be promoting on social media. Are you binge watching TV when you can be doing something more productive with your time. Having a healthy circle with people who want you and your business to be successful is very important. They will help you with accountability, your actions, and maintaining you goals personal and professionally.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I would recommend Master Your Emotions and Motivation by Thibaut Meurisse. I just found out about this book during the same business conference that I spoke about earlier. To be honest I am bad when it comes to reading books, therefore, I used Audible to listen to it. However, I have completed it and I am listening to it again. It was very helpful for me. As I was listening to it I immediately became aware of some of the issues I needed to work on. For example, when you get told NO in business it’s not personal its just business. It also made me see that I needed to change my language because it could change my perspective. For example, Saying I feel sad as opposed to I am sad makes a difference. You are not sad you are (insert name) … you just may be experiencing some sadness at this time, which goes away because feelings come and feelings go … but you are who you are. Hearing this makes me more aware of the words that I chose to use which also allows me to better develop the skill of thinking before speaking. I felt like there were more jewels in this book, lessons to learn, and skills that could aid me in my journey of self-development. Which is another reason why I chose to listen to it for a second time. I finally understand that to be better in business I need to tackle areas in my personal life that were holding me back in business. Now that I am aware of this I have no choice but to challenge myself to be better because I now know better.
