Meet Staci Millard

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Staci Millard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Staci below.

Hi Staci , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

Confidence and self-esteem for me were built in two ways. First, I think you build confidence by doing things. The more you show yourself you can do it and do it right, confidence is built. But sometimes that isn’t enough. It also comes down to writing down what you want to accomplish and being able to actually look back. What was it that you wanted to do? Proof you accomplished it. Second, it’s about doing things that scare you. Acting like the person you want to become. Because if you’ve convinced yourself that you aren’t worthy, no matter what goals you’ve set and what you’ve accomplished, you will not build esteem. But if you set your sights on being the person who is confident and then setting out to act that way, soon enough you will find that it happened naturally.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My biggest personal passion is about contribution to the world. I can see how much small businesses give back to the community, to creating a better way of life for people, and my natural skill set can have massive impact for people in this area. It’s really magical.

One of my businesses is Thrive Accounting which is an accounting firm specifically for Canadian small businesses. Because we know how hard business can be, we are focused on helping small business owners scale and thrive the easy way. We keep the cost of the compliance (bookkeeping and tax filings) low and instead invest in helping you understand the numbers and use them to create a business you love. Your success truly is our business.

And because we believe so heavily in small businesses, we have other business lines to help entrepreneurs as well including The Small Business School Podcast and The Small Business Club which provides networking and resources.

We are most excited about our upcoming online summit for scaling small businesses October 21-25, 2024. This summit is unlike others- we are serving scaling small businesses who are past startup and are finding it hard to find the right advance. You can expect speakers on legal, accounting, insurance, marketing, sales, systems and operations, mindset, and everything in between. Everything you need to run a business- all in one place.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. My willingness to learn and not give up. If you think you know everything, you won’t be looking for possibilities. If you can treat it like a game and be willing to learn, all the lessons are so much easier.
2. Acceptance that, in business, everything starts at the top. You may not have made the mistake but as a business owner you are responsible for it.
3. Once I embraced the numbers (yes even as an accountant I avoided them to start with) everything got easier. I was able to thrive financially while still keeping the heart of my business. I would argue that with knowing my numbers I was actually able to do and give more because I was no longer living in fear.

If you’re starting out, the best thing you can do is look at some of the high level advice you are given and try your best to adopt it. I had to have heard 50 times about everything being my responsibility as an owner but that lesson happened over and over again because I wasnt willing to exam what that means. Make sure you have time for reflecting on some of these items.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

We are always looking to collaborate with value driven service providers.

Sometimes it’s hard to come by those who are “for the people”. Those who give the unconventional wisdom. Maybe they have lower cost service offerings that have massive impact because they know that a happy customer will be a lifetime customer.

We are relationship driven and that is who we attract.

As we handle the numbers end, we often pinpoint areas of the business that need work so having great referral partners fits our plan of helping our clients grow.
