Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stacy Hogan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Stacy, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Thank you. One’s purpose can definitely change depending on perspective. Music has always had an intense effect on my life. Growing up around a musical family in a small southern town in Georgia called “Cairo”.. there was always music everywhere in my household. It was something I never grew tired of. I’d play for hours at the piano picking out songs from movies like Amadeus and Great Balls of Fire. Then, came the guitar with Nirvana.. then came other instruments, songwriting, singing, and eventual producing, running a music business, getting signed to a major label, getting neglected, getting signed again, getting neglected again….repeat.. learn.. repeat.. and then eventually realizing that what I was doing all along is what I was happy doing… just creating music and making a living doing what I love.. on my own terms… especially in an ever changing industry. The music business I once based my dreams on doesn’t exist in this world anymore, but adapting with change and never being lazy with any aspect of it…. has helped me continue to do what I love for a living.
Fast forward a little bit, and now I’m Dad to a little girl whose well-being easily becomes my foremost purpose. To be able to give her a wonderful life thanks in part to not only the journey to this point, but also the struggles it took along the way… it gives a whole other meaning to my “purpose”.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about your current project, “Sin Shake Sin”, which has been on radio, TV, movies, and achieved over 100 million streams. What are you currently working on?
My brand of music with Sin Shake Sin is more “social commentary” than most of today’s music, but not in a polarizing way. In fact, it’s written to show how 2 completely opposing sides of the political spectrum can agree on the basics of almost anything before propaganda gets in the way.. a.k.a. the 24 hour news cycle.
My new song “Your New Civil War” calls out all those who purposely keep us divided simply because it’s profitable and gets them re-elected based on fear…. rather than facts.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
- Resilience – Never letting yourself stay down. Following your dream.. you will get rejected.. you will struggle.. you may get outright sabotaged… but it’s all up to you whether you let that stop you… or fire you up to push that much harder.
- Repetition – Spending countless hours learning your craft… no matter how good you think you may be ….even if things are going great……. you can always learn something new each day how to better your craft.
- Diversify – Don’t get caught up doing just one exact thing… learning multiple skills (even if they’re closely related)…. really helps better your odds in case one doesn’t take off.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
Nurture your strengths for sure. … then diversify within that field. If a passion of yours somehow feels natural to you, then it’s something to explore with your entire being. You have to take the risk of “going all in” or else you’ll never know what you could have done. I’ve lived my life with a very determined “Carpe diem” work ethic because I don’t want to look back and ask myself “did I try hard enough…. what could have happened” .
