We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stacy Lee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Stacy, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I’ve learned that some paths must be made through hard work and determination. It’s easy to take a road that is paved and looks like everyone else’s road. Unfortunately, life often doesn’t work that way. I think it’s important to stay true to yourself–even if you are different. I do this with a strong mind and will to never give up. Prayer has also kept my mind strong and encouraged to keep going despite having to pave my own path.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am passionate about color. I believe color has the power to uplift a room and change its atmosphere! I want to bring happiness and joy to people’s home with colorful paintings. There is so much in life to be down and sad about. I want to fight that by bringing colorful beauty to people’s spaces.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
One of things that has helped me so much as an artist is trying new things! When I was in college, I explored as much art media as I could get my hands on. This has helped me so much in my journey. I am a big believer in exploration and figuring out what works best for you. My advice for someone new to art is to be brave and try new things! Another thing I have learned on my journey is to not be afraid of technology. It can really help you along in your journey. So don’t be scared to stay up to date with technology and see how it can serve you. Lastly, I have learned to be humble. Perfection is great way to stay paralyzed. Don’t be scared to just get started even though it’s not perfect. Be humble! Learn from your mistakes and just know you will grow as an artist over time.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The people who have been the most helpful in my art journey have been other artists! I have taken a lot of art classes, and I have learned so much. I am so grateful for the internet because it has given me the opportunity to learn from people around the world. I have really been influenced and inspired by so many different artist– I can’t imagine my journey without their teachings!
