Meet Star Resé

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Star Resé. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Star below.

Star Resé, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
“Self esteem…Self esteem..Self esteem”…I read the sticker my 5th grade teacher had placed on my desk at the end of the school day. Not understanding what the words meant, I pondered them as the bell rang and the class began to walk to the bus. As an adult I often replay that moment reflecting on what my teacher saw or didn’t see in me that made her decide to give me that sticker. I didn’t notice the absence of self esteem until it began to impact my career and personal life. I found that while people told me they believe in me I never stopped to think what it meant to believe in myself or absorb what they said. So I began to advocate for myself telling my mind its okay to believe good things about me. Externally I pour myself into my art, performance and environment because I love music and it helps me escape. The good feedback from the audience and my community helps me to feel better about my place in the physical world, however I’m still practicing techniques to transfer this sense of belonging internally. As a youth I was constantly criticized by a family member they would often bring me to the mirror and ask me why i was so ugly. Initially I accepted this truth and never bothered to even look for beauty in my reflection. Once I began to cultivate my inner self I started to look myself in the mirror say the opposite of whatever doubts had been thrown at me from online or insecure thought patterns. Looking in the mirror telling myself I was beautiful and worthy of good experiences was a challenge at first but it truly has helped me gain self respect. Besides this technique I avoid putting too much of my worth in external validation. The way I make I make my family, other humans and the Earth feel is my biggest priority. Knowing that I have kindness, love and care to give makes me feel the most confident.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
God has gifted us with the beauty of music. I am so grateful and would like to give back to the universe. Therefore my purpose right now is to raise money and awareness for good causes. Right now funds are shared with charities for every stream of my music and I’d like to do more in the future.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Patience, planning and purpose are three qualities that have been vital to me during my journey. Having the patience to manage my exceptions, fail and start again has been crucial. Planning long term and short terms goals helps me to stay patient and focus on my path. Keeping my purpose as an artist and human being is important to me to stay grounded in who i am regardless of how things are going for me at the time. To develop patience takes practice it starts with the small things like being present as your cooking breakfast in the morning. Stay grounded in the present will help your patience and produce less stress about the future goals.
Using a calendar to plan helps me declutter my mind. My faith in God is my primary purpose and I think its important to focus your purpose on a higher power.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am looking to collaborate with all musicians and especially love the guitar, piano and bass players. If you like jazz and R&B add me on instagram @Starrese_.
