We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stasia Freeman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Stasia, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
I have developed a strong sense of self-discipline, particularly when it comes to making the right choices. This value has been instilled in me since childhood and has carried me into adulthood. My time in the military also strengthened my self-discipline. I consciously strive to remain steadfast when faced with difficult decisions.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I make candles that hold a special significance for me, representing how I processed my grief at that time. My candles are simple, high-quality creations that I love to share with others. They also serve as a connection between family, friends, and those who have transitioned. Currently, I am developing new scents and offering a custom scent line as a special service. This custom line will include personalized labels and a variety of fragrance choices.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Let’s see.
A good quality to have in candle making is patience. I can not stress enough how patience is needed when making candles. There is a significant amount of time spent waiting in candle-making. You will spend time waiting for the wax to melt, cool, and cure properly, and this could take anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks.
Attention to detail is an excellent skill. The key to success is understanding and applying all of the techniques you learn over time to produce consistent candles. You have to learn about the different waxes and their properties. You also have to learn how the wax reacts to the fragrance oils. It is crucial to experiment with other waxes and oil brands and make notes of the performance.
Being adaptable is also an excellent skill to have. Sometimes, things do not work out the way you want them to. You could be problem-solving sometimes as you go along to minimize imperfections. You will also have to try juggling meeting customer preferences. Some people like sweet scents, others like masculine or flora scents. It is good to have a variety of scents, even ones you do not enjoy yourself.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
First, I take a deep breath and calm my thoughts. I write down what worries me and categorize it as either a big problem or a little problem. If it is a big problem, I break it down into smaller steps and address them one by one. If it is a little problem, I reframe my thoughts about it and simplify it further. It is all about making it more manageable to take the stress off oneself. Taking a break is also helpful. Set aside time to pour back into yourself so you can focus on the upcoming tasks.
