We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stefanie Haas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stefanie below.
My maiden name is Baker, so it’s literally in my DNA to bake. I created this clean & organic bakery because I was tired of reading labels and not being able to pronounce the ingredients. With many friends dealing with dietary restrictions, I wanted to find a way for them to have sweets too. After all, everyone needs a cookie now and then!
Hi Stefanie, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
My journey to learning self-care has been messy. I haven’t always taken the time to find what refuels me and nourishes my soul. I homeschool my three boys, and I own a home bakery. Burnout is real, and I’ve found solace and balance through prayer, tending to my basic needs, and injecting a healthy dose of fun into my life.
I’ve come to realize that self-care begins with the basics, especially since I deal with depression. It’s about respecting my body and mind. Making sure I get a good night’s sleep because rest is like a reset button. Then there’s food – I’ve learned fueling my body with nutritious food is an act of self-love, and it gives me the energy to tackle whatever comes my way.
I’ve consciously tried to inject fun into my routine amid responsibilities and obligations. It’s amazing how a bit of laughter and play can instantly lighten the mood. I’ll take breaks to dance to my favorite songs, indulge in a hobby I love, or go for a walk. These little pockets of joy remind me that life is meant to be enjoyed, and self-care isn’t just about tasks but about moments of genuine happiness.
The other way I practice self-care is through my faith. Throughout the day, I often pray for comfort and guidance. When life throws curveballs, I find solace in talking to God. It reminds me that I’m not alone in my journey. Prayer helps me release worries and uncertainties and gives me peace.
Self-care is not about elaborate rituals or doing it perfectly every day; it’s about making small steps each day to become the person I want to be. There are days when I do not care for myself well. But I’m learning how to give myself grace and try again.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi! My name is Stefanie and I own Basic Batter. I’m a mom to three boys that I homeschool and have been married to my best friend since 2006.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities I believe have helped me the most are having fun with my job, perseverance, and learning to hear “no” from customers without feeling rejected.
I created this business on a whim. I had been making the kids’ birthday cakes for years, and at my niece’s party in Jan 2020, people asked for my card. So that day, I went home and created the bakery. It was something that brought me joy and was fun to do! And I choose customers that align with that. If you’re not enjoying what you do, then why do it?
Now that doesn’t mean that all of my job is fun. Which is why perseverance is so necessary. I have to be able to push through the boring and mundane so that I’m able to do the fun stuff.
Growing up, my dad would tell me that you’re not ready to hear “yes” until you’re ready to hear “no.” If you go through life always expecting a “yes,” then getting told “no” will hit you pretty hard. This has helped me deal with rejection. When someone tells me they found a better fit for their event, while it can sting a little, I know it’s going to be okay.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The biggest challenge I am currently facing is creating a balance between homeschooling and the bakery. These are two things that I love to do, and both require a lot of attention. While I understand that my kids will only be home for a short period of time, the bakery is needed to pay bills and is a creative outlet for me personally.
I struggle with time management and lack of focus. I will go all in on something, and it’s really difficult to switch gears.
I am overcoming these obstacles by creating detailed to-do lists, using my calendar, and setting reminders. I’m also talking to trusted people who know and love me, and they help keep me accountable.
