Meet Steph Jones, Mft

We were lucky to catch up with Steph Jones, Mft recently and have shared our conversation below.

Steph, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

In all honesty, my purpose found me as I believe is the case for many. I knew early on that I wanted to help others live peaceful lives full of freedom by making them feel comfortable enough to release their emotions because of the very interesting environment I was raised in. Although love was present, anxiety, arguments, criticism, and maladaptive coping skills often overshadowed it. I learned early on that I had a gift for making people feel comfortable enough to share their deep feelings. This gift was further revealed as I rode public transportation or shopped at the mall and encountered strangers who shared their most intimate experiences with me.

I recall when I was only 5 years old and a middle-aged woman who lived in my neighborhood invited me upstairs for some tea. My older brother and her sons often played outside together and our families were very familiar with each other. Her getting me a cup of tea turned into an hours-long sharing session in which she told me about her marriage, difficulties raising children, etc. I just sat there, listened, and drank my tea. When my Mom came knocking on her door frantically, she was chagrined to find me there. As I was being pulled out of the door, I heard my neighbor apologize profusely and say “She’s just so easy to talk to.”

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

It is true that when you love what you do, you never feel like you are working. Although I received a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy, my true passion is being a life coach. During the pandemic, I was searching everywhere for tools to use to assist others and me with remaining calm in the midst of uncertainty. I know that it was The Most High who directed me to the essential tool of mindfulness.

Out of chaos and calamity, Selah Mindset Counseling Collective, which focuses on finding authentic peace was birthed. With my additional therapeutic training, I am able to bring deeper psychological perspectives to my mindfulness life coaching business. I work with individuals, groups, corporations, schools, churches, etc. to help them unwrap the gift of mindfulness and assist them with implementing it in their daily professional and personal lives. It is such a beautiful sight to see entire atmospheres changed when my clients grasp the concepts of awareness, being present, meditation, and allowing all emotions/feelings to be processed,

It is my sincere hope to offer more virtual and in-person life coaching groups to further assist those ready to take a courageous step onto the path of healing.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three nuggets that were most impactful in my journey are taking my own medicine, consistency, and finding a good tribe.

Often, we do not consume or apply to our own lives what we share with others. It is really important to constantly be evolving and growing so we do not become complacent or familiar with our material. Before I can coach anyone on mindfulness, I must first apply it to my life so I can show others the path that I actually walked. This concept can be applied to every area of our lives.

Every day we should be doing something that will benefit the growth of our entire being (mind, body, spirit) It could be as simple as watching a video on material that we want to learn or attending a conference in another state/country for personal development. Doing something every day allows us to remain consistent and in motion so our mental muscles do not atrophy.

We really cannot be successful in business or life unless we have a great team around us. Our tribe allows us to hear different perspectives and become more comfortable with hearing helpful feedback that will grow us. It is important that we be cautious and aware of anything feelings/emotions that would make us deny help from others.

How would you describe your ideal client?

My ideal client recognizes that there are certain patterns they possess which may impede them from accomplishing their mental wealth (wellness and health) goals. They may be hindered by procrastination, indecisiveness, inconsistency, or mental blocks and need assistance with rewiring or navigating through the jungle of their thoughts.

Ideal corporate or faith-based clients recognize that employees/congregants are finding difficulty with finding a balance with workplace wellness and need some tools and insights into how to find a sense of peace amid deadlines and fast-paced work environments. These clients would be interested in workshops on self-care, proper mental wealth practices, and team-building retreats to calm and center the mind.
