We recently connected with Stephanie D Singleton and have shared our conversation below.
Stephanie D , thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
I boosted my risk-taking skills by hanging out with people who love to take chances.
Growing up, I was super curious and always wanted to know how things worked. This curiosity sometimes got me into trouble, like when I touched things I shouldn’t have or tried to open stuff I wasn’t allowed to, all while attempting to put everything back together so no one would notice.
As a kid, I didn’t get to travel much, but my imagination took me to all the places I dreamed of visiting, especially New York City, known for its lights and entertainment. Even though I never made it to NYC, my adult life took me to Virginia, California, and Nevada reside and work for many recognized names in the entertainment industry.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a part-time writer, meaning when time permits or when my thoughts are impacted by a moment in time I find myself compelled grab my laptop to tell a story rather in for book or for a stage play format.
Although I have written nonfiction, my favorite genre of writing is fiction stories. As a fan of the imagination fiction stories allow of me to exaggerate the reality. Which allows me to travel both my mind and my readers or audience’s is mind to another place and viewing reality from optimistic perspective.
For me the power a writer has to manipulate words to achieve a particular emotion is very intriguing.
So far I have written.at least 5 books and 9 stage plays on various subject titles.
As a matter of fact my most recent stage play title “Closed On Sunday” is a hilarious live sitcom on stage. Formed by 9 cast talented members, and is set to take place Spring 2025 at our local Main Library Auditorium .in Downtown, Akron Ohio.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The key qualities that shaped my journey are belief and action. For me, believing in myself or what I want is essential; I often push my beliefs to the limit until I can prove something is impossible. This ties into taking action, which is crucial.
Once I visualize a goal and believe in it, I dive in to make it happen. While skills matter, they aren’t as vital as taking action; relying solely on skills can hold you back. Skills can be acquired easily with the wealth of free resources available online, like Google and YouTube, as well as apprentice and mentorship programs.
However, if I were to advise someone aiming for a goal that seems out of reach, I’d stress that without dedication, determination, and commitment, all the skills and knowledge in the world won’t make a difference.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I start to feel overwhelmed, I take a moment to pause and evaluate my thoughts and emotions. Juggling multiple projects at once can really throw me off balance, leading to a whirlwind of chaotic thoughts due to uncertainty.
To alleviate this stress and regain my focus, I find that making a to-do list on my phone or jotting it down in a notebook can be incredibly helpful. This simple act allows me to organize my tasks and calm my mind.
