Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stephanie Fritts. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Stephanie, really appreciate you joining us to talk about a really relevant, albeit unfortunate topic – layoffs and getting fired. Can you talk to us about your experience and how you overcame being let go?
I started my business! Thankfully the executive I supported was extremely transparent about the pending layoffs. However, I didn’t start my business right away; I immediately started interviewing for a ton of executive assistant roles. But because I had been working remotely for almost four years and didn’t want to go back to commuting and working in an office, I Googled “remote executive assistant” late one night and a company called Admin Boutique appeared. I applied and the founder reached out to let me know I was overqualified for the position—they hired college students for $12/hour to run errands for people locally. And what she wrote next changed my life: she was looking for someone to buy her company and asked if I knew anyone who would be interested. Um yeah, ME! This opened up my brain to the possibility of starting my own business. Ultimately I didn’t buy the company, but I did manage it while she worked on another venture, and this was a fantastic glimpse into the world of entrepreneurship.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Exec Wranglers is a virtual assistant services company that wrangles administrivia for entrepreneurs and executives who are making a difference in the world – either through their business offerings and/or their support of one or more charitable organizations. We call them Impactful Leaders. What is administrivia you may ask? Here’s the dictionary definition:
Noun. 1. administrivia – the tiresome but essential details that must be taken care of and tasks that must be performed in running an organization or business
We have an extremely talented and diverse team of virtual Wranglers who free up these Impactful Leaders from their day-to-day operations, allowing them to focus on their “zone of genius” and thus reach new heights in their businesses. By facilitating their growth and enabling them to make an even bigger social impact, we are creating a ripple effect of goodwill and humanity in the world.
And because there is no “unicorn VA” who knows how to wrangle all administrivia for a business, our team works collaboratively so that everyone is working in their respective Zone of Harmony. Collectively our team is a unicorn VA!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One of the best things I’ve learned (and am still learning) is to focus on your zone of genius (we call it the Zone of Harmony) and delegate the rest. Ultimately this means working ON your business and not IN your business. It can be difficult to delegate, especially if you’re bootstrapping your business, but it will be well worth it in the end.
Another thing I’ve learned is that joining a community of entrepreneurs/business owners early on is invaluable. I joined a women’s entrepreneurs’ group about a year after founding my business, and it has given me the knowledge, mentorship coaching, and emotional support that I needed to run my business.
And I’ve also learned that the Universe has my back (which is a book by Gabby Bernstein), and that obstacles are detours in the right direction!
