We recently connected with Stephanie Mazumdar and have shared our conversation below.
Stephanie, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
When I think of work ethic, I instantly look to my parents. Both my Mom and Dad have incredible work ethic. As far back as I can remember, they have led by example the importance of one’s character in business and continue to teach me every day the values of consistency, determination, and kindness. My parents built their lives by working towards a clear goal, every day. That’s not to say they have never taken time to readjust, they certainly have. I believe this is an important part of work ethic; knowing when you need to shift or turn left rather than continuing straight. In my opinion, this goes for professional and personal life too. My parents have been happily married over 40 years and have managed to find careers in tandem. They now own a successful business in an industry they enjoy. Even though I am in a completely different field from my husband, my parents are my inspiration and shining example of how to work hard and still live life to the fullest. You don’t have to have it all figured out right away. You don’t even have to do what your parents do. You just must know what your individual goals actually are and then find the direction or path to take you there. Then, it is about getting up every day and hitting the ground running. Pretty soon, you will find yourself exactly where you are meant to be.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As a professional makeup artist of 15 years, the most special part of what I do lies in the fact that I get to be part of extremely important and often sensitive times in other people’s lives. This could mean that I am there helping someone get ready for a soul-bearing interview with 6 cameras, loads of lights, and millions of people expected to tune in or maybe it is someone’s wedding day, and their entire family has gathered to witness. Whatever the moment, event or occasion, I never take for granted that I get to be there for major moments in people’s lives.
When I am not doing makeup artistry, I am working on my company Lip Lūffa, which is now sold in 4 countries. Lip Lūffa Lippy Eraser is a full-service lip product that is used for prep and removal of highly pigmented lipstick and even gently exfoliates without the mess of sugar scrubs. Clean, smooth, and hydrated lips are just a swipe away with Lip Lūffa. We are vegan, cruelty free, and non-toxic for life!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
If I were to choose 3 qualities that were most impactful on my journey so far, I would say kindness, individuality, and adaptability. Nobody wants to work with someone who is rude, just like everyone else, or stubborn. Part of what makes the beauty space so exciting is that we welcome differences. When you are just starting out, or in a place where you feel you have plateaued, maybe try to re-evaluate your levels of kindness, individuality, and adaptability. Are you judging others? Copying someone’s work rather than using it as inspiration? Maybe you are doing the same things over and over, only to find that you are still where you have always been. Be fearless in the pursuit of your style. Be open to learning other interpretations of beauty. And always be kind.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have done for me is always show up. They are there for me in the best of times and the worst of times. They celebrate my wins and console me through my losses. It is my great luck in life to have parents and a sister who have never given up on me. Add in my loving husband who always has my back and my support system is locked. Whatever or whoever is in your support system, I encourage you to rely on them. There is no way I could have come this far as an artist and entrepreneur without people who care for me and for whom I care about.
