Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stephanie Purcell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Stephanie, thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?
I would say I take pride in my communication skills. I think they were developed very early on in life. My family were very open and we were always pretty honest and talked about a lot of things openly with one another. Once you understand that communicating effectively is helpful in a lot of situations, you often continue to communicate in that way, I’d also suggest that being someone who can talk on the phone is very helpful in our world today. I love talking on the phone. I’ve had a lot of practice! It’s an easy way to cut through explanations rather than in text format and speed up the process.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I run a management agency that books talent for corporate and special events. I get to work (and have fun) with my trusted colleagues and friends. We also manage the career’s of a some talented people and produce a few events a year.
On May 1st we are launching VOX Talk, a new podcast featuring industry professionals in the live events sector. I’m bringing good people to my kitchen table for conversations about what happens behind the scenes at events and the people who help bring them to life.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
- Showing up – Being present in the music and events industry has really helped to build relationships with talent, colleagues and suppliers. Attending industry events, volunteering time and demonstrating a team mentality has really helped to foster great connections that have led to many referrals for our business at VOX.
- Doing the hard work – The 10,000 hour rule of achieving true expertise is putting in 10,000 hours of good quality work. There is a lot of grind but in turn there is great reward. Building a solid reputation of delivering on your word and being a true professional helps the phone to keep ringing and you can have a lot of fun along the way.
- Being authentically myself – This is the key to finding your people. People want to work with people they like, respect and admire. Being yourself helps to connect you to your people. This helps you to have resources, experts, mentors and friends to build your career with and people to call when you need ideas, advice and celebrate the wins.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth is getting in the mindset to figure out how to grow the work we do and the bottom line of the business. I talked with my business coach about feeling some momentum for growth in the business but I was so tired from my pandemic journey. She helped me realize I had been in fight or flight mode for a few years. I had recently had about two years of consistent, solid business and we were doing pretty good but I was feeling burned out. She suggested that I ride out the rest of 2023 and get focused on figuring out a growth strategy once 2024 starts. Since the beginning of this year I’ve been working on assessing where we are and where we need to go and figuring out a plan to get me to achieve a growth plan in 2025.
