We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stephanie Saunders a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Confidence and self-esteem are a fickle emotions. One day you are on top of the world! And the next, you question how you even made it past the velvet ropes. So whats a gal to do? I always feel more confident and self-assure when I know I am prepared and practiced. Nothing can set off the inner doubting voice like ‘winging it’. However, sometimes there is no time and you have to go with the old adage, ‘fake it ’till you make it’, which is hard but if you truly believe you want to be in the room, be considered, be heard, be victorious, it’s often the only path to take. I’ve done both. I’ve had time to prepare for big tests in school, or to get licensed as a real estate agent. I’ve done many theatrical productions and in that setting you really experience both. The first day of rehearsal you give it a try, make mistakes, and get better before the audience arrives. But when you have to audition on the spot, or, meet a potential new client at a party or an open house, you have to wing it. You have to find a way to connect with the other person, or at least, make them think you got this even when you may be improvising. I good trick is to focus on the other person. Ask questions. Be interested. Listen and hear what they are saying or speaking about. While you give the spotlight to someone else, you take the pressure off yourself. And, you become much more confident, and there is nothing better for self-esteem than making a new friend, connection, or client.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back all I can say, is you don’t connect the dots until later in life. You can plan to go in one direction and years later you realize one event changed your trajectory. Which isn’t always bad. Sometimes life can surprise you and take you places you never even imagined! So three qualities that have helped me would be the ability to listen to your heart and your gut even when your mind is racing. Thinking slow, but acting quick. If something feels wrong, move fast in another direction! And always keeping an open mind and continuing to learn, educate, and implement new ideas or technology. If you are new to a career, I would say knowledge is power. Learn everything. Watch others. Ask questions. Ask to shadow someone for a day or a week who is experienced. People love to share their knowledge, you just have to be confident enough to ask.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I usually change my headspace and energy. No sense in beating you head against the wall, the wall has nothing for you but an ugly bruise. But switching rooms, going for a walk with my dog, exercising, seated breathing, reading pages in a book, watching something funny…all of these help me change up the energy. Have you ever noticed sometimes your best ideas come when you are driving or even in the shower? It’s because you are open and relaxed and allowing for free-flow thought. Do something else in order to give your brain a chance to solve the problem for you. It works!
