We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stephanie Unger a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
Back before Google, I used to run a website with a news section, and I hated it writing that column each week. It was such a struggle for me, that some weeks I would even have stomach pains. A few weeks into this job, I was talking to my friend Matt from College. I told him about my challenges with the news column, and he asked me to send it to him for feedback. I did, and much to my surprise, he loved it. So, the next week, I decided that I would write the column as if I was going to email it to Matt instead of sitting in a bar having a beer. As I began to write, I was amazed at how easy and fun writing the weekly article was. Again, I emailed it to Matt who loved it, but all my colleagues really liked too; and I decided that moving forward this was the way I would write.
As I progressed throughout my career; I would hear about creating a client avatar and how important it is. Now as I look back, I realize that I did exactly that with the new column. My client avatar was my friend Matt. Today, when I have creative blocks, I remember who my client avatar is and create whatever it is I’m working on just for that one person; and the process then becomes more natural and enjoyable.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Empowering Online Business Owners to Captivate and Convert Their Audiences
At the heart of what I do is a deep for supporting online business owners in elevating their marketing efforts, enabling them to generate more income and make a greater in the world.
Special Focus: Captivating Slides for Coaches, Speakers, and Trainers
Currently, my primary focus is on helping Coaches, Speakers, and Trainers create slides that captivate their audiences and effectively convert them into paying clients. My journey into this niche began when I attended numerous masterclasses and workshops, where I often felt overwhelmed, confused, or even bored. This experience made me realize the true culprit behind these feelings was not the content itself but uninspiring slides that failed to engage.
Transforming Presentations with Purpose
I believe that combining marketing principles and psychology with cutting-edge technology is key to transforming presentations. This approach fosters an environment of trust during webinars, which is essential for potential clients to feel confident in taking you up on your offer.
Free Resource for Our Community
To support our community of ambitious Coaches, Trainers, and Speakers, I’ve created a resource titled “10 Keys to Create Slides that Help You Sell Checklist.” This handy guide is designed to empower you with essential tips and strategies to craft slides that not only captivate but also convert. I invite you to download it for free at https://tinyurl.com/slidescl.
Keep leaning into your power and purpose. Remember, clarity comes from action, and the world needs your unique voice and message now more than ever. You have the tools and the potential to make a profound impact, and we’re here to support you on that journey.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on the Journey: The Three Most Impactful Qualities, Skills, and Areas of Knowledge
1. Mindset: Embrace the Adventure
Starting your own business is an adventure filled with many twists and turns. Having a flexible mindset is crucial to navigating this journey. You will learn so much about yourself, and it important to be willing to look at yourself objectively. Self-criticism can be a stumbling block; I used to fall into the trap of beating myself up over mistakes. But with the guidance of an incredible mentor, I’ve learned to ask myself two transformative questions:
1) What did I do well?
2) What do I want to change for next time (or in the future)?
These questions foster growth and persistence. So, my advice to those early in their journey is to cultivate a mindset that celebrates learning and resilience. Surround yourself with mentors who can provide fresh perspectives and support your growth.
2. Market Research: Be the Solution
We live in a dynamic world, and being able to adapt is key. Knowing your market and identifying where you can offer value is vital. Ask yourself: What are people in my market complaining about to their spouse, best friend, or neighbor? Identifying these pain points can set you apart. You can conduct market research through various methods—polls, surveys, forums, Google searches, but my favorite is the 15-minute informal interview to gather feedback.
To those starting out, I advise immersing yourself in market research. Become a detective of sorts, constantly seeking to understand and visualize the gaps in the market. These insights will help you offer solutions that truly resonate with your audience.
3. Taking Imperfect Action: Embrace the Learning Process
Taking imperfect action has been one of the biggest hurdles I’ve had to overcome. As business owners, we desire acceptance and love for what we put out into the world. However, we’ve been conditioned to fear mistakes. Remember, when we were learning to walk, talk, or hold a glass, we didn’t get it right the first time, but we were praised for our efforts. Somewhere along the way, we were taught to strive for perfection.
Mistakes are our greatest teachers. Taking action, even when it’s imperfect, is how we learn and grow. So, my advice is to shift your mindset and celebrate your mistakes. Each mistake is a steppingstone to success and a testament to your bravery in taking action.
Final Words of Wisdom
Clarity comes from taking action, not the other way around. Keep leaning into the journey with courage, curiosity, and compassion for yourself. Your path to success is paved with lessons, and each step forward, no matter how imperfect, is progress.
You’ve got this! Trust in the process and remember, your clients are waiting for YOU.
