We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stephany Peterson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephany, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
This question has come up so many times in my life. I have always desired to have purpose in my life and have found through the years, that when I tried to define my purpose, I was under the assumption that it would be one thing. I assumed it would be my career, my marriage, my children, my friends. I found that my purpose lies in so many areas. My purpose is being myself and living out my faith in God. In that, I find that it’s not made up of one thing, but many. I live a whole and full life because I found my purpose in life is to leave a legacy of kindness, love and blessing.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
It is my joy to serve couples on their special day as their wedding planner or coordinator. It is common for most to not have the slightest idea of what a wedding or event planner or coordinator does. When I get the question “what do you do?” I love to explain how my team and I play a pivotal role in ensuring that one of the most important days goes smoothly. There are many nuances of any event that is planned in the background, that guests or attendees know nothing about. There are also situations that need to be handled without the clients being burdened with on the day of. My job is to not only oversee my team, but to execute plans smoothly and seamlessly. When I coordinate an event, I ensure that the plans of my client are carried out as they envision. I like to call myself the game day girl! When I plan an event with my client, I am not only sourcing vendors, giving advice and keeping plans on task, but keeping our plans on target. I am the background game day girl you never knew you needed!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say that hard work, patience and surrounding myself with people that made me better were most impactful. I had to recognize that owning my own business was not a 9-5 job. It’s a 24 hour job. I am constantly thinking of how to improve my client experience, how to utilize tools and amazing assistants I have and keeping my goals in the forefront to ensure I don’t stray. I had to learn to be patient and recognize that success does not always come overnight and that sustained success is the goal I needed to strive for. I had to learn to surround myself with people that would make me stronger, better and wiser. I have been so blessed to have amazing humans in my corner throughout my life.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents have been very supportive of my endeavor to start my business. I would like to add that not only my parents, but my spouses parents as well. All of the parents in my life have modeled hard work, integrity and kindness. These qualities have had a lasting impact on who I am and the clients and people I come into contact with. The ripple effect of being a human of integrity and love is the greatest thing anyone can do for a child. In my case, it has grounded me.
