We recently connected with Stephany Poe and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephany , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from the many women of color, who look like me who worked twice as hard as everyone else and still get knocked back down several steps all to have their dreams crushed. I saw firsthand, how those crushed dreams halted women in pursuing their dreams and goals. Encompassing that with life’s hurdles, women decided to give up because they could not handle the amount of pressure placed upon them. I saw how they were filled with regret because they no longer had the stamina to pursue once again, even though they desperately wanted to. The overwhelming amount of sorrow was apparently abundant, but these women never expressed that sorrow, until their seasoned years. In their seasoned years, they finally communicated, that their sadness which was indeed regret. I kept hearing the phrase “if only…”
My resilience comes from my inner desire or fire if you will, to want to achieve my goals. I knew for a long time, that I was meant for much more in life, but in my younger years I was not as articulate as I am today to express that. I was meant to help others on a global and massive scale, but again, I did not know how to express or explain that notion to anyone because it sounded really crazy to say out loud. And of course, it all came with tons of questions as to “how to.” Though it was something, I knew I had to do. Not only for myself, but for my loved ones and the women & men who were watching me the entire time only I didn’t know it. I was not interested in becoming another statistic in the world as a woman of color with children, especially since I became a mother young. Too many young parents are easily written off and overlooked at by others of all class & status and the impacts of that was significant and visible. Fear became the choice of operation for many individuals who felt that impact and I was determined NOT to live my life operating from a place of fear. So despite any obstacles in my way, I continued to take progressive action steps forward and being the example of achieving your goals and dreams no matter what you looked like or where you come from.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the owner of the company POEE Coaching and Consulting, where I work with organizational leaders to help them bridge the gap between the generations in their work spaces by improving leadership skills, assisting with overcoming obstacles, and promoting effective communication between frontline staff and higher-ups through a series of workshops.
I LOVE what I do! I love being able to speak with leaders and staff members of all levels in an organization, helping them get to the root cause of issues for improvement! Whether it’s working with a small business who needs assistance with establishing their documentation to help build their foundation for their company, to mid-size businesses who needs assistance with growth challenges, or working with large businesses who are in need of sustainability measures. I love it all! I love talking with people, motivating them, inspiring them to reach their goals and dreams, and importantly, helping them become self aware so they can properly self reflect on their choices and actions. In other words, how to discover and maintain self-accountability. The standard is a 3 day 4hr workshops with the purpose of bringing balance back into the workplace, however, it is not uncommon for leaders to want something more detailed with is why I also have an A-La-Carte Package.
I am also the author of the book, “Perfect Progression,” highlighting the impact of passive-aggressive leader(s), insecure supervisor(s), high achieving team members, and it’s corporate facilitator. And how those behaviors/person(s) have a long lasting impact on people’s mental, emotional, and physical capacity. Some would say that such behaviors as these could impact them spiritually as well. Let me continue to say, I never wanted to write a book. Writing a book takes ALOT of time, energy, effort, and editing and even this sentence is an understatement for the person that will be reading this. However, I had more than 5 different people to tell me that I need to write a book! I have a wealth of knowledge that needs to be shared with the world adding a little help from a higher power and I decided to complete my book project.
Now, looking back, I am so glad I wrote this book! I LOVED writing this book because it really dives deep into the workplace issues and not the mundane or surface level issues. I am talking the nitty gritty conversations, the inner thoughts of a person on the receiving and giving end of such behaviors, and what action steps are actually taken that impacts people at work. How lack of communication, poor systems, unhealthy or toxic workplace culture cost money in every capacity for both the employee and employer. We spend so much of our time at work as we do at home, that the issues are bound to cross over and yet we are still facing issues of leaders being passive-aggressive in communication or dealing with the effects of another leaders insecurities all because we show up, do our jobs, and do them well! Just being in the position of feeling helpless because there is nothing that can be done or worse, being on the receiving end of that injustices not receiving assistance from our leaders or HR dept because there isn’t any or enough “proof.” Well, my book “Perfect Progression” dives deep into just what injustices actually look like in a work environment to give organizational leaders an in-depth and detailed view of what can or is happening in their work environment. My book serves ALL organizations and is to be embedded within their arsenal of improvement toolbox which is ready for Pre-order at https://poeecc.com/perfect-progression. However, the best part of completing this book project, was talking about “Perfect Progression” and why I chose to write this book to random people whenever I am out and about at the local grocery store, gas station, library, my kids schools, friends of friends, professionals of all background and in various industries look at me with tears in their eyes and a smile on their face, giving me hugs, holding my hand, or place their hand on my shoulder saying “thank you for telling my story.”
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One: LEARN!!! I cannot stress that enough! Be willing to LEARN beyond your mainstream areas of retaining knowledge. Learn from your mistakes, learn from your gains, learn from others, and most importantly, learn about WHO YOU ARE! Aka… Become Self-Aware!
Two: BE OPEN to a different Perspective! You are very knowledgeable, skilled, and talented. But what got you here, won’t get you to where you to the next step. The next steps requires being open, willing, and accepting a different perspective that isn’t yours and then applying it. Ask yourself, how do you want to leave this earth? Well received, or well discarded.
Three: Behave as if you already where you want to be consistently! It’s scary to walk into the unknown, but that’s also where the joy is! If you know what we’re going to do daily there’s already a plan in place for it based on a various factors including planning for what can go wrong, right? Right. However….. Picture this, if you walk into the unknown, you do not have factors to flood your thought process into what the possibilities of what could go wrong, but you have ALL the factors of what can go right or in your favor! In the space of the unknown, you have the option to create whatever reality you want! So create a reality using your goals as the foundation and feel the happiness from achieving those goals. Do you feel it? Can you feel it? What does it feel like? Now, walk, talk, and behave as if you’ve already achieved. Whatever that feeling is for your, operate in that feeling consistently mentally and emotionally you not only have created your future, but you’ve brought your future to your current. So own your destiny!
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client would be small business owners who are having challenges retaining employees/recruiting potential employees, need assistance with interviewing/hiring, and strategic planning, Mid-Size business owners who needs assistance with navigating regulatory issues, have growth challenges, and needs assistance with operational scale. Lastly, large-size businesses who needs assistance with assessing staff turnover, assistance with the decision-making process, KPI’s, maintaining quality customer relations, risk assessments, and even culture challenges. One of the perks of working with me is receiving personalized trainings that is tailored for their company culture depending on the package selected.
POEE Coaching and Consulting works with all industries, government agencies, franchises, nonprofit organizations, small, mid-size, and large organizations in the Unites States and other companies in other countries as well.
