We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stephen Boyd, M.ed a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Stephen with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic comes from my parents. My father was a farmer and custodian. My mother a school nurse. Both grew up during times when children worked on farms and had to do chores before and after school. When I was born, that same work ethic was passed down to my brother and I. My father had us working in fields, chicken houses, cutting grass, harvesting in gardens, etc. There was ‘no rest’ for the weary!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The name of my company is SB Entertainment, LLC. Our mission is to create compelling content that entertains, educates, excites, and empowers! Our education division designs and provides professional development opportunities for the K-12 market in the areas of classroom management and student engagement.
What is special about our education division in particular, is that we don’t stop at professional development, but offer coaching, focusing on strong application.
One of our most recent proprietary training entitled Contagious Teaching, is a training designed to provide teachers with the ‘secret sauce’ of Master Teachers. Coined in the circles of education as the ‘it’ factor, this training is not only being converted into a book, but a conference called the Contagious Teaching Conference. The conference’s mission is to provide new teachers (those with 5 years or less of teaching experience) with the competency, character, and chemistry skills they need to become Contagious Teachers! The conference will be in June of 2025. Registration and other details are coming soon!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that have been the most impactful on my journey have been my creativity, my work ethic, and my circle.
As a creative, I have honed in on my creativity; embracing it as a superpower given to me by the divine (it has not always been the case). Embracing my creativity has allowed me to respond to moments of epiphany, leading to books, trainings, music, etc.
My work ethic comes from parents. I was born into a working class faith-based family. All we knew was work, school, and church…scroll repeat! My dad had my brother and I working in chicken houses, fields, cutting grass, and working in gardens. My mother would have us shucking corn, snapping string beans, butter beans, serving needy families with bags of food, clothes, and other essentials. When I reflect on my childhood (I didn’t realize it then, but I realize it now), I realize that it was their work ethic that paved the way for my entrepreneurial journey.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Currently our number one obstacle is scaling and expanding the business. It seems like once you nail down one system to scale and expand, the market shifts–which means you have to adjust. This impacts your bottom line.
To resolve this issue, I reached out to partners in similar industries (with similar challenges) to see how we can collaborate.
