Meet Stephen Hamilton

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stephen Hamilton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stephen below.

Hi Stephen, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
My love for music keeps me going. Music has always been a big part of my life and I do it because I enjoy it. Some of my biggest looks in the industry came days after snubs in my hometown so I take opinions with a grain of salt. Maneuvering the industry can be tough but if you genuinely love what you’re doing, the outside chatter is irrelevant. In my experience, baseless resistance is a sign that you’re onto something.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a California based DJ & Music Producer. I make everything from House to Dubstep. I’ve supported festival DJs on tour like ATLiens, Habstrakt and Louis The Child via Insomniac Events. I have a YouTube channel where I share my experience in the industry, break down music production, react to funny clips and address industry taboos. With my content I want to show people whatever they’re striving for is possible. I became a Youtube Partner and have a growing community I’m thankful for.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Self-motivation, attention to detail and willingness to adapt. Self-motivation is a good skill to develop early, especially as a musician. There is no teacher telling you when to practice. There is no supervisor telling you when to take action. If you want it, you have to create that structure. Attention to detail is important because small things can set you apart and show you truly care about your craft. Willingness to adapt was big for me because it’s easy to fall into counterproductive cycles then wonder why it’s not working out. What’s comfortable isn’t always constructive. Identify the loop and fearlessly pivot.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I take breaks. It could be an hour or a day. I might go on a run, walk my dog, read a book, watch an episode of a comfort show, play video games with my friends. When I come back, I have a fresh mind. Don’t overthink it.
