We were lucky to catch up with Stephen Wilson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Stephen, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
As an artist or really anyone pursing their creative endeavors, I would say developing confidence and self-esteem wasn’t something that happened over night. It was a gradual process that only came from consistent creation and reflection. When I first started out, I was constantly comparing my work to others and often questioned whether my ideas were “good enough”. While I think it’s important and even beneficial in developing a style, at some point as an artist you have to move past mirroring other’s ideas/work and cultivate your own style. Over time, I learned that confidence isn’t really about being delusionally believing in yourself or having that “fake it til you make it attitude”. Confidence is about being sure of your process, which only comes from constant practice and preparedness. By dedicating myself to practice, allowing space for mistakes, and embracing experimentation, I started to see growth in my technique and voice. Each finished piece, no matter how imperfect, became a reminder that progress is built on persistence.
Another major piece in building up my self-esteem came from sharing my work publicly. Exhibiting my art, posting it online for world, and receiving both positive and negative feedback helped me understand that my perspective holds value, and that my own uniqueness and authenticity is what truly resonates with others.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a visual artist that works under the brand name Evzy (pronounced Easy). My brand focuses on creating art that operates at the intersection of figurative and surreal imagery in order to visually communicate the human condition. What most excites me about what I do the connection that I form with anyone who may see my art and can intimately relate with the feeling or experience im attempting to communicate. Some time in early 2026 i’ll be launching limited edition canvas prints of my work as well as re-entering the creative clothing space with the goal of starting a premier brand dedicated specifically to creatives of all disciplines.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities that I think were most impactful in my journey have been detachment, curiosity, and self-awareness. Detachment was important in just being able to let go of pieces or not being too invested in them. I think the ability to flow with wherever the piece is taking you and not being stuck on whatever idea you had at the start can make for some truly great are. Detachment is also useful in being able to discard pieces that maybe just aren’t working and easily starting over. Curiosity is crucial for any artist starting out, especially just allowing yourself to try a wide range of different styles, techniques, etc. Lastly, self-awareness is important for progression in your artist abilities. If you’re not taking the time to reflect and be real with where you are skills wise, what your goals are, why you’re doing certain things, then you’ll never truly move forward. You have to be aware of what a problem is in order to address/fix it and grow.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
While it may be cliche, The Alchemist is a book that has played an important role in my development as an artist. That book really taught me about self-discovery and having the faith to follow your heart, both of which I think are important for anyone ina creative field. Another topic of the book that I think served as a cool key nugget of wisdom was the idea of the overall connectedness of the universe. The idea that the universe is essentially conspiring to help you once you truly commit to your purpose is what often motivates me to continue going down my art journey.
