We recently connected with Stephy Ellsworth and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephy, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
I have overcome writers block by free writing or “word dump.” During this time, I write random words to stimulate my thinking process. Occasionally, I will locate an inanimate object in the room & give it a personality, make it a character, or imagine what it would be thinking or saying. This sparks my creativity.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My writing journey is unorthodox. I was once known as an independent blogger hobbyist, but now known as an independent columnist and freelance journalist that created a lane for my in the Journalism & Mass Communications industry.
I have not had any formal training or traditional education & refer to myself as God made but self-taught.
I became the self-acclaimed “Voice of the People” & use my voice & writing to speak on behalf of those who feel silenced. I have been “the voice” for the African American culture, the mental health community, small businesses, acts of injustice, & inequality.
I am expressive mogul behind the self-named brand, Stephy Says which offers shameless marketing & support for small businesses. My vision is simple: Engage. Empower. Impact.
I am an international published author, NewsBreak Community Voice Pro contributor, Black Girls Leadership Academy mentor, Certified Master Life Coach with niches in Goal Success, Personal Development, Life Purpose, & Happiness, certified blogger, motivational speaker, & a workshop facilitator.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The 3 qualities that were the most impactful in my journey were patience, tenacity, & courage. The advice I have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop these qualities is to never be afraid to start over. Success is in the journey, not in the destination. Failing is inevitable, but being a failure is an option. You can bounce back from anything!
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I write when I feel overwhelmed. I allows me the opportunity to emotionally unload without unintentionally damaging anyone I love in the process. My advice would be to journal or write your thoughts, feelings, or emotions at the time that you experience them. This would be the time that what you are feeling or thinking is the most raw & authentic. Store the writings in a safe place or burn them afterwards. It feels like you are burning the experience & the piece you feel afterwards is surreal.
